Area auction schedule

I see a fairly active schedule going into April compared with the past couple of years. No doubt some scheduled for late February and later not announced yet. Are things looking to be more active this year versus the last few where you are at? I don't really "need" anything but would not mind an inexpensive project tractor.

Could be things have hit an equilibrium for the time being. I see that in my immediate neighborhood. Besides the usual consignment and dealer inventory reduction there are a fair amount of retirement sales listed.

There have been very few the past few years. I'm guessing retirements have been in other venues than the traditional farm auction.

There have been more "retirement" sales around here this last year. I think the down turn in the crop prices has driven it. When there is good money in row crops it is "fun" to farm. When your breaking even or loosing money it is not so fun anymore. Therefore you kind of have built up of guys retiring. They may have normally retired a few years ago but did not because things where good. No many of them are selling before things get worse. Land prices are down some around here from the peak but are still sky high to me. Good quality used machinery still is bringing good money too. So if your thinking about retirement I think the values are better now than they will be in the near term future.

The serious farmers around me are gearing up for another BIG corn crop. They just can not pay the rents they have with soybeans. So if we have a near normal crop I think $2.50 corn is just around the corner. Eventually these lower prices with start to effect the land and equipment values.

NY 986 what part of NY are you from? I maybe looking for some equipment and would like to start watching for local auctions. Where do you find the info for auctions and a schedule? Auction Zip?

Thanks in advance...

I am far from retirement age wise and having the financial ability to do so. Land prices are clearly backing off their highs from 3 years ago here. A few properties are on the market priced at values from 3 years and they have been sitting for several months. One "gambler" that bought heavy several years ago is selling down and presumably get out from under some debt. There is no enthusiasm coming out of the dairy guys which is understandable. There is also talk that these are watershed times in that a lot is happening in other parts of the world and that the US will lose its export outlets that it has relied on for so long. The farm is making money but my wife has had some setbacks that have cost us so money is tight. There is iron I would not mind having but the buildings could really stand some new roofs.

Very few auctions listed in the monthly MI Farm Trader as compared to years past, especially slow this winter it seems. Maybe it'll pick up when it's a little closer to spring?

Sykora's list is growing. One here that surprised me. Full line of Deere equipment and collector tractors right in my neighborhood.

I know some farmers have a Monopoly game type mentality where they have to own everything so they pay anything to do so. Having said that I agree that in the long term land prices will reflect what is going on with commodities. I personally don't see the point of owning everything in the neighborhood and paying triple or quadruple of what land was 15 plus years ago when the commodity picture dictates 1970 prices.

Best thing to do is to subscribe to Country Folks. The big time auction outfits and the podunk ones advertise there. I'm in the western Finger Lakes region around 45 miles SE of Rochester. Check out Pirrung Actioneers and William Kent among others.

NY 986 I think your seeing your area well. There just are not many real positive things going on if production agriculture right now. I also agree that depending on exports for your major markets is spotting as far as pricing goes.

Weather effect production more than just about anything else. So now you have the weather world wide effecting prices. This last price jump in 2010 was a result of this. Russia and Australia had wipe out in their wheat production. It cause a world wide shortage of feed protein. That is what ran up prices so fast. It was not just an expanding domestic market. So now the rest of the world ramped up production so the price swing is going the other way. I think we are not even near the bottom yet. We are NOT the lowest cost producers in the world. The market will have to go down far enough for them to slow down production before the market will swing back up.

Auctions are pretty scarce here in eastern Nebraska, also. Consignment auctions seem to be doing OK, but very few farm sales.

20+ years ago, you had to choose between several farm auctions every weekend. The thing is, there aren't that many small farms anymore, they're all BTO's and the few that do fail/retire just turn leased equipment back in.

Seems like there are fewer farm sales scheduled for the next 6 weeks or so than in a 'normal' year in eastern Ohio.

I'd like to have their livestock trailer. Only trouble is,I think it's the same day as the big consignment sale here. Kinda hard to straddle that distance and be both places at once.

NY986 and other Western New Yorkers: No doubt we will pass like ships in the night at many of these upcoming auctions. As long as you don't bid me up on anything I want, there will be no trouble :)

Maybe not Pirrung, though. Jim Pirrung just dinks around way too much when he's selling. There's a reason most of his auctions are in New Jersey.

Any auctions in Febuary or later schedualed will not be advertised and most of them the sale bill not yet writen even if a date is picked. Lucky if advertised a week and half before sale. Usually only 2-3 days before. Costs way too much to do more and if advertised too soon people will have forgoten the date by the time it has come up.
