Bought a tractor.....

Paid $2,500. How good/bad did I do? T/a works pto works drove it 6 miles to my parents from where I bought it. No weird noises on the drive no wierd smells and no drips after I got to parents. I figured 6 miles is enough to warm it up. It was +25 today it fired up with no choke . I bet it didn't spin over twice it fired and was running. It's in it working clothes. Ps serial number puts it at a 1958

No doubt some one saw one sell or bought one last week for 600 dollars. Always seems like the great deals are somewhere else. lol looks good in her work clothes. gobble

What ever is being used fro a hitch takes away from the cash value, but try to purchase an equivalent
usable tractor even a few years old and you did well. It will serve well Jim

I would have like to have paid less but I've been watching the market for about six months now and seen 2 Ms in not much better shape sell for $1,500 and $1,750 a M with live hyd sell for $2,500 and a 300 NF with better paint but 25%tread on rear sell for $2,600 It is still at my parents I'm trying to line up a trailer to bring it home. Sod Buster.

Sodbuster according to tractor data that is a 35 pto hp. tractor that sold new for $3100.00 so I M O you did very well. what would a new 35 hp tractor cost today? $35,000.? would it have the weight and torque to do the work that old girl will do--don't think so. how many here think a 2018 tractor will still be around 60 years from today? todays tractors built of plastic and fiberglass, computer controlled, good luck keeping that going yourself! tractors back then where built simple, easy to work on, reliable rugged and with just some common sense maintenance and tlc your able to drive 6 miles down the road, pay the man, jump on fire it up and drive it home no issues. that is the reason I jumped all over the 2 m-5's I got this summer, looking at the pics you posted the old girl looks in nice shape and whoever owned it before you looked after it, I say you did very well. great find sodbuster

Fast Hitch or just a drawbar?

Sounds like a solid machine, with good tires you got a machine you can use, not a bad deal.

I have a 300.

sodbuster i'll fire up the old dodge and hookup the goose neck and be right down to load the tractor and haul it home for you--but I might get lost on the way to your place

"How good/bad did I do?" depends on what you are going to do with it. If you have use for
it, you did fine. If you intend to "restore" and resell, it's like most things, you won't
make any money.

Well all my relation calls me and the wife Canadians and we call them "Iowegians" I see your are from Canada. I'm not quite that far north. I'm still about 2 hours from the border. Sod Buster.

It sounds like your happy with it so you did great as
far as I can see! It's a beautiful straight ol girl. If your
planning on keeping it you really did fine. Like some
others mentioned it's near impossible to make
money on an old tractor now but if that's not the
intent you can't go wrong.

I can see another good thing. Guessing she has the hydraulic draw bar
and TA. I see three control handles up there. That is a Very good
thing! Have fun with her.

If you're in it to make money, that's one discussion that can go on for hours and consume a lot of Rolaids.

If you like it, and you can afford it, then consider it money well spent. Still a pretty cheap hobby, all things considered.
Can't plow your driveway with a stamp collection, nor pull a stuck car out of the ditch with the latest video game.

As said previously those rear tires are worth a chunk of money so factoring that in you did alright. A friend is looking for a 300 and one was sold at auction nearby back in December. I did not go but it was NFE, No fast hitch, rear tires kind of poor, and from what I can find out it sold for 1,225 dollars. He is looking at a similar 300 currently and will get to drive it this weekend. They are a handy tractor especially with the fast hitch.

Reading between the lines, most here I would say believe you paid too much. That is not necessarily true. If you are a collector or want a tractor for restoration, you might have paid less for a tractor with fewer cosmetic issues maybe. Or looked for a cheaper one so you could afford all the parts and pretties necessary to restore. But I buy a lot of equipment and I work it. If you have a medium size acreage and are farming it and you need a tractor to run a baler or pull a sprayer and do odd lighter weight jobs like those, then the factors you listed make that a pretty good deal. Decent hp, starts right up, no major leaks, easy to work on and cheap to run...that is the sort of tractor that gives a good return on your dollar. Fun to use too. I have an SMTA I paid $4K for back around 2000. Never done anything major to it and still work it on the mower, baler and rake every year. I have a 300U I paid around $2500 for several years ago and was an older "restoration". Bit of a PITA to start in the cold but it does a lot of odd jobs in summer and pulls my boom sprayer every Spring. Both were on the high side price wise but I would not give them up. Especially the SMTA. No looking back, you got a nice tractor. Enjoy it!

That's a beauty. A good working tractor is so much less expensive own than a neglected pile of abuse.
I sometimes wonder why some folks start so far in the hole then spend a fortune getting to where you
already are. Good buy IMHO.

I bought a 300 at auction for $1180 with tax and all, it had TA, fast hitch and IPTO but the engine was stuck and I knew it had some kind of internal problem which was why the previous owner
had parked it. I had stopped at the house and asked about it a few years before the auction, as the tractor sat by the road, but he said he had $2200 in new transmission gears and other parts
in it and I knew I didn't want to buy it for that much. It had junk tires too. I had to replace one piston and sleeve due to water down the muffler, and i had to replace some parts in the IPTO
driveline that required a double split. I also put in a used differential since the old one was chipped in places. I also had to buy a used gas tank, both halves of the carburetor shell, and do a few
other things. Then I messed up the transmission pilot bearing and it broke up about 20 hours after I put it all back together, so I had to do another double split. By buying used parts except for
the piston and sleeve and head gasket I was able to get everything I needed to get it going again and kept the cost out of pocket for the tractor and parts around $2,000 or $2500 , and it has
been a very helpful tractor for me for 5 years now. I was very lucky to have the advice of people on this forum, and to be able to get many of the parts from a very kind forum member, or it would
have cost a lot more. I'd say you did fine to buy your 350 at $2500 with good tires and everything working, as long as it keeps working for you for a while. With the wide front you could always
sell that and put a narrow on to recoup some of your money, and I like the narrow front a lot better for haying and working in the woods. Best of luck with the 350.

I know less than squadoosh about Farmall tractors. Here's my 8 cents worth(inflation).

You buy a vintage tractor, and all the various important bits work pretty much as designed. It goes fairly straight down the road, no parts fall off, and it'll lift some weight from the 3pt or fast-hitch, or whatev. Decent tires, and moderate patina without a lot of torch/sawzall damage.

Hard to go wrong at ~$25-2800. Given the labor, parts and hassle to do a head job, or a clutch job, or a hyd job, or a dozen other jobs on a tractor that you buy cheaper. Did you get the lowest, bestest, bargain of the century? Maybe not, but you got a solid machine, which shows recent care, and that's worth $2-300 bucks no matter if it's red, green, orange, or yellow.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.

Well, just look at this way...you will be , and already have, had your tractor out enjoying it while the $ 1500 ones are still working on theirs and emptying their back accts. I'd say ya did good!

Starts right up. Runs good. Drives good. No unusual noises, no leaks. Rear tires look good. I think you got a bargain.

Agreeed ,..Abird in the Hand is worth 2 in the BIUSH ......Runninmg is Far Better than tinkering Around trying to get the thing Straightened out ,,. Starters , Generatrs , Hydraulic Pumps , Braske Shoes clutches ,OilbFilters EVERYWHERE AND OIL Chsnge Too ,,.You get my DRIFt ,,.You a re Ahread of the GAME

Don't mistake what someone is willing to pay for a specific model of tractor for where the market is. That's what a lot of this is.

IMHO, you paid enough. If you were buying it for resale there wouldn't be any "meat on the bone" left, but if you are going to use it and get some value out of it, it's a fine price.

Just spotted another thing in your pictures. I had to drool. All of
the badges are there but the one 350 badge has some screw holes. No
biggie. That blue angle bracket bolted to the steering columb is for
the wind breaker snow hood. Boy I put those on and off a few times.
Trouble with them is that mice really like them. Also has newer gas
cap but looks as if the original radiator cap. Never having a wide
front tractor on our farm I noticed those plates bolted to the frame
just behind the radiator. Those are how the wide front is held on?
After market assembly? Lots of fun looking over your photos. Also, YOU
HAVE a serial plate!!! Hooray! You need the rubber knob on the end of
the shifter. There is another rubber button that goes on the PTO
leaver. Like the bridge decking step. On the oil filter there is a
little drain plug. Think it is 1/8 pipe. It is a bear to get out
because they just never get removed. Use vice grips to get it out and
put a Brass one in with a wrap of teflon tape. Also be careful not to
break the plastic bowl on the prebreather assembly. Have fun with
your toy.

the plates on the front frame rails are tied to the wide front. It is a Schwartz wide front.

Looks good to me.The one thing i do after i buy something,is quit looking at ads.Because you see stuff that might be cheaper or look better and wonder if you got a good deal.

I think that tractor looks real nice. I'd say 2-2500 would be fair. If it has no mechanical issues - you've got LPTO, Live hydraulics, plenty of power for a medium sized task list, and the best part - they are only original once. This one looks very straight and nicely taken care of.

I've got a tractor that I WAY overpaid for... But I wanted it and at the time I wasn't willing to wait. We all have those experiences I think at least once.
