Another tractor hillside topic

Been using my buddies JD5320 4x4 with HST, R4 tires and a 6 foot bush hog to cut his and my property. Both areas have some flat and there is a lot of backing up a hill cutting brush and grass.

I like the HST tranny because it gives me more control. Also have a CAT backhoe which uses shuttle shift and this type of tranny would be OK, but need to use the break more often.

Looking at getting a tractor for my self and would like to use a bigger bush hog, or better yet a finish mower. Not sure yet what I'm going to do with my 24 acres (crops, beef, lamb, other) so right now I'm just trying to figure out which tractor would work best.

'Here" 24 acres is either $150-280 an acre rent to a farmer for row crops (corn/soybeans) or make hay and sell for a few thousand a year or if
really steep rent out for beef or horse grazing, 45 cents a head per day cattle would be $20 a day while grass is growing or big bucks per month
for putting up with horse owners.

And you pay property taxes per acre to reflect good income, so you best be using the acres for something productive.

It must be different where you are if you just mow it like a giant lawn, we aren't rich enough here to do that. :)

Anyhow, so you have about 4 different directions mentioned there, and each one I would pick a different tractor to use for each direction.

So it's hard to answer your question.

It would appear you are wanting a fairly new tractor, which we have experience with here, but we all tend to suggest older stuff because this is
an older tractor forum.

You might find newer compact tractor advice on tractorbynet dot com, if you don't get help here. They chat about the new little fellas a lot more.

Don't know to much about a rich comment, but there is about 40 to 50 acres between the two places which get cut. Buddies gets bush hogged twice a year and my 16 or so acres gets mowed at least once a month.

Back to my question. I don't care if its old or new, but what I do like is HST because you don't need to use the break much, and there is no clutch. If I had to use a clutch on the hills I'm doing I wouldn't get much done.

Been looking at the 70HP and up tractors so it can use a larger mower/bush hog.

Would add, that the larger tractors sit higher off the ground so would look at smaller tires to lower the center of gravity

Wider tires, move them out for wider stance. Not smaller.

Don't think there are any older tractors with hydraulic drive, not the way you mean - some IHC models from the 70's were popular. They can be
handy loader tractors, but not good for plowing, so depends what direction you go.

I have 3 acres of field roads, and people tease me on all the wasted space...

If you want your F-R pedals, you're pretty much relegated to newer compact tractors. Nowhere near 70HP. I think you might find up to 50 engine HP in these. Don't know if it's a market thing or a limit of the technology. Bigger than that you start getting into the CVT's.

IH did make a version of the 656 Utility Hydro with F-R pedals instead of the side console speed control, but good luck finding one. Hydros are fairly rare compared to 656's as a whole, and only some of the 656's were made with the F-R pedals. A nice example could run you upwards of $10,000, then if the hydro turns out to be no good that's $5000 down the hole. You could buy a new Deere compact for not much more than that, or a mildly used one for about the same. Go to the off brands and your money goes even farther.

Thanks guys, maybe need to go look at Kubota more. My Nephew has a M6 or 7000 series tractor. He said he had them make his with the standard trans because he didn't like the while of the hydro. I have a RTV1100 and it does very well climbing around the hills.

Guess I just need to go do some more looking and find out how far the tires can be moved out
