Radiator Studs - Sealant or no?

Hi All,

As some may know, I have been working on re-coring a radiator for my Farmall F-20. In the process, I had to remove two broken studs from the bottom tank that hold the hand crank system. I put two new studs in and the radiator is now reassembled and back on the tractor.

During leak testing with just water, I found one of the studs had a slight leak, as the studs go straight through into the bottom of the water tank.

My question is, should I remove the stud and apply any sort of teflon tape to it or gasket maker? Or should I just leave it as is?

I was able to tighten it and the leak appeared to have stopped, though as I will be filling the radiator with antifreeze, I want to make sure it will not start leaking again in the future. I did have to drill out the old stud on this particular stud, so the threads aren't quite as tight as they should be.

Thanks in advance,

The best sealant in my opinion for the studs would be the old black #2 Permatex. Second would b? silicone gasket maker/sealer, just make sure it's all clean and dry when you put them in. Also, wait a few hours for the silicone to air dry/skin over before putting antifreeze in. Antifreeze can sneak by silicone like you wouldn't believe if not cured enough!!

Thank you. Not sure why I didn't think of it before, but I will go back and put sealant on the studs. I believe they are long enough to remove without having to take the radiator off again. Thanks again
