Sleigh Bells

Following a Christmas tradition followed since my childhood, I rattled the sleigh bells from my Grandparents farm this morning as was done by my parents when I was small. Though I no longer have family in my area, the sound of the bells conjures up memories of Christmas mornings past.

The three strings of bells, large, medium and small, were brought back from my Grandparent's farm in Tama County, Iowa in the early 1950s by my Mother. Born in 1915, my Mother told me that on a cold, quiet winter morning when she was small one could hear the sleigh coming across the fields from a mile or more.

The Tama County farm was homesteaded by my Great Grandfather after he mustered out of Grant's Army following the Civil War and is still owned by my first cousin. It has been a century farm since 1967.

In the not too distant future, I will pass on the bells to my son in Montana.

The sleigh bells were very important on a team, in the dark it warned others that a team was coming at them, the bells were audible for some distance and it warned other teams of horses that you might be meeting in the dark or snowstorm, my grandfather would never take his team out without the proper bells attached to the harness

Dean, I enjoyed you sharing this and gave me real meaning to the bells, and the tradition will continue.

There are things like Christmas tree bulbs that belong to my family that add that meaning every Christmas
Thanks for sharing.

I have my Grandpas sleigh bells. He farmed with horses well into the 1990s, and they are a reminder of him when I see and hear them! Great memories!
I often felt that he did not appreciate me! I played basketball, not football for one. BUT, I was thrilled when he asked me to rebuild a snow wagon runner for him! (It was a working wagon, nothing fancy about it, but it had runners for snow only!) You see, I am a carpenter and it was made of wood with a metal band around. It had rotted from age and did not work anymore. I was truly honored that he asked me to do that for him!

Indeed, Michael.

Sleigh bells were a safety device to warn others, especially pedestrians, of a nearby team. One often could not hear an approaching sleigh until it was very close.

Sleigh bells became associated with Christmas only in relatively recent times.

Yes!!! Those bells let the DRUNKS staggering home to get out of the road. Sorry but that was the first thing that popped into my minds eye.

Great post!

Tried to read your post to our daughter, who's a high school senior. Couldn't do it - got choked up and had to hand her my phone and sniffle, "You read it."
