Hydraulic Problem

I have a farmall 504 and when I gets really cold out the hydraulics don?t want to work the loader won?t pick up the three point won?t work or the power steering .You have to sit there and slowly turn the steering wheel for a long long time before the Hydraulics finally start to work I bought it recently and I had all the fluids changed by the previous owner I?m thinking he just put two thick of hydraulic fluid in it because once it gets warmed up the hydraulics work great there?s no problem whatsoever and they?re extremely powerful. Do you guys think that?s the problem?

The cheap yellow bucket of 303 hydraulic oil does not like cold weather

It looks like you have an oil change in your future. Running cheap oil for a little while to give it a good rinse is a good thing. Just get the oil good and hot by running the loader and three point up and down for a half hour before draining, and you will get a lot of sludge cleaned out. A clean hydraulic system can save a lot of wear on seals.

For whatever its worth, the farm store Hytran replacement is thinner than the other trans/hydraulic oils. The latest spec of Hytran and Hygard are the same viscosity. Deere also has a low viscosity version of Hygard. I use the farm store Hytran spec in my Massey, otherwise it does exactly what you describe in the winter.

Not trying to hijack your post, but how would you like to diagnose this hydraulic system? Landing gear door from a military aircraft, forget which one.

I just drained it out of my 3020 the previous owner must have been running it . Stuff was so thick the tractor couldn?t pull itself in 8th gear switched it over to an oil that? meets j20c and j20a and it made a whole new machine out of it

Every farm store around here has it works pretty good when it?s warm in the winter it don?t work good at all unless you warm it up for a long time

The John Deere (JD) 303 designation is 57 years old and has been obsolete for 43 years. In addition, there are no specifications available for 303 THF, and as such products making only ?303? claims cannot be tested to assure compliance with any known specifications. Because of this, in the interest of protecting consumers, the State of Missouri ordered that ?303? THF cannot be sold in the state.

All 3 places now have hyd fluid that comes in buckets that look like it is the 303 fluid but is not or is branded different. Plus in has a handle on the bottom of the bucket to make it easy to pour but there is a catch to the handle the bucket is a 4.8 gal bucket instead of 5 gal so they rip your off for the handle and I bet many never notice
