John Deere 4010 Tach

My Tack has been broken on my 4010 since I got the tractor. My question is the only parts that make the tack work is the cable and the tach itself. If I disconnect the cable from the rear of the tack and crank the tractor and the cable turns then the tach is bad. If the tach cable does not turn then I assume the tach cable is bad. Is there anything else to check?

Most likely a bad cable everytime mine quits
working I thinks it?s the tach but everytime it?s been
the cable . I?d disconnect the cable off the back and
start the tractor and see if it turns

I know the tach is bad because the needle is broke. Guess my question is the only 2 parts that can go bad are the tach or the cable. Any suggestions for replacement tach?

Steiner tractor has the correct tach and a free other
places do to as far as I can tell they are all foreign
made I wrote to evergreen I think it was and they
said they don?t rebuild em and I asked where there
tachs came from they said they didn?t know

Could be the tach, or cable, or whatever drives the cable.

A frozen tach can take out the cable or drive.

You'll want to check the cable before you order the new tach.

Unscrew the cable from the back of the tach, start the engine, see if the cable turns. If it is turning,
try to stop it with your fingers. You should not be able to stop it. If you can stop it, follow the cable
to where it attaches to the engine. Not sure what drives it, but there is probably a small gear involved,
it can be stripped. Either way, now would be a good time to inspect, replace, clean, grease the cable.

If it hasn't worked in years, chances are there will be some problems with it.

Mine didn?t work for the first 25 years I ran it
growing up on the farm put a new cable on it and
she went to work

Several places that will rebuild your tach. Star Speedometer ph.# 386-569-5284, Metro Speedometer 816-478-0116

Yes. If the cable spins when disconnected from the tach, then most likely the cable is GOOD. From experience I can tell you that a defective (non-working) tach probably WILL take out a brand new cable.

I disconnected the tach and started the tractor and the cable spins, tried to hold it with my finger and it kept turning so the cable is good. I will replace the tach, but one question.
What can I lube the tach cable with before putting it all back together.
