When I worked for an Allis Chalmers dealer they taught us to write REPAIR on the ticket rather than WORK ON.
 
That picture is the result of early drag racing with automatic transmissions. Initially, the technique was to bring the RPM's up and drop it into gear when the light went green.

The high failure rate led to the development of the "clutch flite" and later, high-stall torque converters.

Carburetors are to close together to be a cross ram setup.
A friend has a 426 Max Wedge with cross ram intake,
the carbs are over near the fenders.
I'm thinking it might be one of the early race hemi's.
A friends race hemi had a carburetor setup like that.
