Never had a interest for it when I was younger, but talk to the Mrs.'s and she said sure, so I got my Mom's recipe out, and put it together. I will say this, it sure is good with a cup of hot coffee

Two key points I learned from my mom on making fruit cake.

You never have to much fruit.
And you need to make them in October so you have time to soak them in whisky.

My mom use to make at least 30 or 40 fruit cakes a year.
She gave them out as presents.
Once you got one you looked forward to next year and hoped you would get another.

My mother made them when I was a kid and I really liked them and I ate to much and got sick and can't look at one today.

Andy.......my mom made fruit cake with EXTRA cherrys. It was my job to de-pit the figs. She would wrap each fruit cake with clean cotton sheet scraps and soak'em with grape juice. Store'em in weather tite 5-gal can in basement fer ageing. One year, she fergott one cake and boy did it age good. Was almost like Jello.......slobbering Dell

When I seen the title and clicked on this I though it was going to be about people for California. But now I see want you are talking about. Like mine with a smear of cream cheese.

(quoted from post at 07:02:08 12/18/17) Ours got soaked in rum.

A light dribble every other day (half a cap full) for a couple of weeks, alternate sides.

Hard to wait that long though.

Ok, a further teaser, here is what it looks like after I cut off a slice for my afternoon coffee!

You really know how to hurt a fella. I love fruit cake, but no one around here makes it anymore. Only place to get it is WalMart. Their's is ok, but not great.

Mom always made hers in the early fall and would soak them in rum or brandy once a month till Christmas and would save a couple next year. the aged ones were always better.

I'm interested in this soaking, were you around when your Mother did this? Curious how it was done. My Mom NEVER soaked them in Brandy or Rum. (Lutheran). But I want to know more

Fruit cake? You mean people actually eat them things?  I thought you were supposed to use em as a door stop!

Collin Street Bakery, a bakery on Collin Street in Corsicana, TX. has been making and shipping them world wide for who knows how long. My first was back about 1968 when I moved to this area. Still making them. What's neat is that you can order a cake and have it shipped anywhere. Makes a nice Christmas gift for whomever in a distant location.

Yes, I have heard of that place, and glad its there for those that cannot have homemade.
