Trail cam in shop?

So my shop is about 125 feet from my house. I recently had some health problems and the wife needs to be able to monitor me. I thought about a baby monitor at first but then a trail cam came to mind. I have no experience with trail cams. Just wondering if any of you could give some advice on a system. I would like for my wife to be able to see that I am OK from the house. We do have WIFI in the basement and my laptop works in the shop. I hope no one else has this sort of issue!

If you have an old smartphone with a camera, there are apps you can use to set it up to monitor anything with another smartphone.

home depot has some security camera kits that seem pretty reasonable, under 200 dollars i think. has 3 or 4 cameras.

Look up Nest Cameras we bought the 3 pack at Best Buy to moniter my moms house they work great, clean crisp picture in real time with a 30 day memory. Also picks up sound, can hear a conservation across the room from the camera the cam goes to their website and then we log in with a password,my sister 1500 miles away in Texas can keep an eye on my mom when we are busy.
The 3 cameras cost about $400 and has been a real asset for us.

The Nest setup mentioned above is pretty nice. One thing to keep in mind is that you will need a good high-speed internet connection for it to work well.

I have some relatives that have a Nest system in a vacation home not far from me with only "sort of high-speed internet". I have gone up there to check on the place and the relatives sometimes only get the notice with a pretty good delay. The speaker and microphone delays make an actual conversation nearly impossible.

(quoted from post at 08:39:33 12/14/17) So my shop is about 125 feet from my house. I recently had some health problems and the wife needs to be able to monitor me. The wife did quite a lot of reading on different models, as she is usually in one room while I'm in another and it's difficult to hear each other. In the end, the one she liked best was the Vtech VM343 (https://www.amazon.com/VTech-VM343-...49&sr=8-6&keywords=vtech+baby+monitor). It has good range and does not work via wifi, so the signal seems to be better than some other choices. It uses cordless phone technology, so the signal is quite good.

However, the monitor with the best reviews seems to be the Infant Optics DXR-8 (https://www.amazon.com/Infant-Optic...TF8&psc=1&refRID=XNT8QGZ7BQNEZTTV2MFY) To me, it has a more simplified button console that will be much easier to both learn and read. Both of these units can have multiple cameras attached. One can have, I think, 8 different cameras! You can talk between the base unit and the camera(s) with 2-way audio. Range is up to 1000' in perfect conditions, and it seems these things will reliably perform well to at least half that distance. Should be no problem for your needs. The Vtech costs less, but hopefully this will help you with your decision.

As a last thought, if ever needed, you could always get a 2nd camera for your unit and have it at the front door facing your shop so that she could see if anything happened between there and the house. Word of caution though, these are NOT meant for outdoor use! Rain will likely eat these things up in a heartbeat. One at/near your front door would have to be well protected from the elements.

Hey Tractorcedric.. this is what I use.. wireless camer. I have one in my metal shed which is 50 -60 feet from house with wifi.. If you have a laptop or iphone.. the software is called meshare.. its free. this particular camera has video and audio... so she could ask you if your o.k. etc. etc. Camera is about 26.00 or so. There are other cameras that can also work with meshare..

I have and use 5 of these cameras around my place for security. work very well and for what your wanting would work great...

I have Arlo smart home security cameras, they work on wifi and can view there videos on a pc from anywhere in the world no monthly charges from the company for utilizing there server

Harbor freight has a wireless camera for $259 with a range of 450'. I can't them one way or another, but it seems pretty reasonable.....

been using these for about 10 years now. Pan, tilt, and zoom with wifi built in cost a bit more, but work very well. Have a external nat/name server so you can access the camera from the internet if you know how to set your local router up for port forwarding. No pan and tilt cameras are cheaper. The heat sensor will point the camera towards the object on the newer ones, store pictures, and send you an email. These have been around a long time and have a good track record for longevity.

My daughter has a big baby spoiled cat, her and the son in law live Chicago and went to Nashville for 3 or 4 days over Thanksgiving. She hired a woman to feed/water the cat daily and she had some kind of camera to watch the cat. She was home since and was watching the cat on her IPhone, could even talk to it and watch the cat go nuts trying to find her.
