Skidsteer battery?

The battery finally failed on my Bobcat S185 and it takes a grp 24 battery with 600 cca. I can get one from Bobcat dealer for 104.99, or one from Ellis battery for 70.95 but it's 550cca. I haven't checked elsewhere yet but grp 24 is very common. Wondering if a car battery will be affected by the bumpy ride and jarring?
The old battery from Bobcat had a date of 2011.

i just run a regular automotive battery in my skid loader. what ever would fit in there. not had any problems, been about 5 years. i do keep it on a float charger.

I will not buy another battery from Ellis, I thought one was going bad and had them to test it and they charged me to do test it and it tested out good. since then I bought a carbon pile tester and can do it myself. I will just buy my batteries from Sam's Club

Is there really a "heavy duty" battery, as opposed to a "car" battery?

A local rebuilder put on a little auto electrical "school" a couple years back. They said the highest CCA battery of any given size has more, thinner plates, and is MORE subject to vibration damage, than a lower rated one.

I have ac delco batteries in everything, they do just fine. From tractors to backhoes and skid steers. Our dealer is really good and brings them
out in 20 min

Oliver, I hope you realize AC Delco manufactures little or nothing anymore.

Your "AC Delco" battery was made by Johnson controls, the maker of DieHards and Interstate batteries, to name a few.

quit buying wal marts batterys 5/6 years ago. just having bad luck with them lasting. orchelns batterys do okay. sams clubs seems to carry decent battery. important thing is that your charging system is working properly so you can get some life out of it. I suspect most batteries are made at the same place, cranking amps are very important. batteries are listed by group sizes. don't think they care where there used.

That is why we also check the amp hours or the minutes reserve capacity . The more lead and acid there is in the case , the more capacity the battery has.
So in short , find the largest battery that will fit in the compartment with the highest 25 amp reserve minutes .

Group 27 is only 3/4" longer and has 100 more amps of cranking power over a group 24.
If there's room in the battery box I'd install a group 31 commercial truck battery, 950 amps, very common battery.

I get all of my batteries at Rural King, only been using them for two years so don't know how long they'll last but their a 1/3 cheaper than any other place I've looked.

I buy all my batteries at Sam's Club. Best prices I can find anywhere and the quality seems to be as good or better than other places/brands I've bought in the past. Not unusual for a battery to be $15-20 cheaper for the same battery at Sam's Club.

Some of you guys have probably seen that chart that went around 3-4 years ago that shows who really makes all the battery brands. Bottom line was about 90% of auto/truck/whatever batteries are made by 3 US companies so there isn't much difference no matter what color. Some of the guys that were die-hard "this brand is the BEST" got a surprise to see that their brand was rolling off the same assembly line as the K-Mart store brand.

Yes I know. Just was saying what I buy. Most of mine gonin trucks,
but they last in equipment too. The Parts house is so good and quick
at delivery (less than a half hour) I always tell them I wish they did
groceries too!

Higher CCA rated batteries may have "more, thinner plates" but in this age of "make it cheaper," the lower CCA batteries have FEWER thinner plates.

More directly, the plate thickness is the SAME.

Don't know where you are but around here Runnings has the best prices on batteries, and the best selection. They sell Exide.

Batteries like tires or lube oil are made in only a few factories but there are dozens of brand names . Just because factory X makes Y and Z batteries , don’t think for a second the batteries Y and Z have to be or will be identical.
Bargain Bubba Brand that sells for less, cut costs somewhere between manufacture and point of sale .

I can't speak to all brands, but I've sold Interstate for more than 10 years. They do make the automotive (white case green top) and commercial (black case, black top) batteries differently,
The commercial batteries have a porous membrane around the plates, and a layer of epoxy in the bottom to hold the plates from moving at the bottom. This makes them more resistant to
vibration. Your application may not need the heavier construction, but the PITA factor of taking it in and out sooner may be a consideration also. The way they (Interstate) explained it to me
was the automotive batteries a designed to give higher peak amperage for a shorter time, and the commercial to supply less peak amps but fr a longer time.

I'm going to get one tomorrow from orschlens cause they are on sale plus it's senior discount day. Going to cost less than $70 including tax.

I buy there Utility batteries and have had very good luck out of them and they cost around $60 each. I have them in 3 or 4 of my tractor and one in my Toyota car

Whatever you buy, put it on a trickle charger for 24-48 hours. Teacher in battery school told me to do this
back in 1975. Alternator will not put the deep charge into it that it needs to last a long time. Also I
always put the trickle charger on my battery's in the fall after the season is over, leave it on there over
night. My lawn mower battery is close to 10 years old.
