rocker panels

my 92 chevy pick up needs rocker panels my local auto paint dealer sell glue on ones anybody ever tried these? they are slip on

When I was starting the resto project that I am in now, My mentors all told me that glue-on is the way it is done now. The guy who builds high end hot rods discouraged it for my project though. He explained that with years of heat cool cycles from the sun that the bond will slowly open up. For a car that is in constant use and racking up the miles then going to the crusher when 20 years old it is the way to go, but for a resto where you want it to last longer, not so much. It sounds like Panel Bond is the way to go for you. Be sure you kill the rust with a phosphoric acid product before putting it together.

I guess it depends on what end result you want and what you want to spend.

I've done rocker panels and cab corners on several pickups from that era, but I've never used the glue on parts. Having redone some 68 1973 to 1986 Chevy and GMC pickups, plus some later ones, over the last 35 years it's my opinion that nothing will replace new steel welded in with a MIG welder.

Looked like quite a procedure, but still easier than welding.

I've done weld-on, rivet-on, and glue-on. All held on just fine and rusted out again before they came loose. I'd take glue and rivets over weld any day. It is very difficult to not burn off the rust-proofing when welding and often there are hidden spots you cannot get to when done to paint.

I am putting new rockers in a 2002 Astro Van right now. Glue-on. I was kind of surprised at not being to find any made of galvanized steel. All I came across are just plain-steel and primed. The glue-on are sized differently the the weld-on.

Glenster posted a picture but it looked like it takes 25 pairs of Vise-grips to hold the panel in place while it dries.

Nephew is a body man, said he was disturbed when the glue ons came out- now likes them just fine- they're faster, and he's all about getting done quicker than the flat rate manual says.
