Just looking for some thoughts. Has anyone used a tractor rear end as a basis for building a Baker Fan? Im thinking there must be some way this could work as you would have a means of driving it by belt or PTO and you would have a range of gear to adjust for different speeds or loads. Blades would be fixed to wheel centres and the whole thing could be fairly easily secured for driving purposes.
Any thought welcome.

Seems like it could be done but I wonder how much good you would get for all your troubles to build it? The well made belt driven ones at our shows have two pulleys, fast and slow or as the steam guys say, hard and easy. Very few tractor guys will belt up to them at our shows and those that do have belt pulleys. Biggest mistake I see people make who build them is they build them too big. It takes a BUNCH of HP to pull a Baler fan when spooled up.

Most people appear to believe that doubling the rpm of a Baker fan only requires doubling the HP.
 
It?s appears to be a large ?paddle wheel? type flat bladed fan. Must require a fair amount of horsepower to turn. I did not know what it was until I googled after reading this post. I saw a video of an R JD belted up to one. When he finally snapped the clutch in after about a half minute of slipping it the old two lunger was begging for mercy. Lugged down to about the point where you can count the cylinders firing. I?m attaching a thread to the smokestak forum which has a picture of one.
