John Deere 2520 and 3020

Is the 2520 just a lighter weight version of the 3020? It looks like they are the same horsepower but the 2520 is about a 1000 lbs. lighter and has less drawbar pull

As we discussed this earlier,, there are a few differences and a few things that are the same in both tractors the engine and clutch assemble is very different , the steer motor is different, the transmission is near the same,,it is a Waterloo tractor with a Dubuque engine,,the clutch of a 2520 has some things that are not good,, the engine is a Dubuque made design and it is okay and replacement engines are plentiful..the 3020 clutch is near the same as a 4020 and is more than tuff enough for this model,,the engine has the same piston/liner/rod as a 4020 and is a stronger made design,, but this engine is a unique engine to this tractor only and a replacement engine is near impossible to find. I am looking at a 3020 LP that has a cracked block and has been setting for the past 20 years,,I have been toying with some adapter thoughts and different power units for it,, I have heard of a guy in Indiana I think,, that has made a kit to put a Dubuque engine in them.. I have kicked the idea of a Cummings engine around a bit too,, In a way I'm thinking they are not worth the trouble,, and in another way I'm looking at the interesting challenge of making a clean usable conversion...Both tractors are good light duty chore tractors and are nice to operate as well as convenient to get on and off of ..

3020 diesel, SynchroRange, wide-front weighs 765 lbs. more then a similar equipped 2520. 3020 has a Waterloo engine an a Waterloo powertrain. 2520 has a Dubuque engine bolted into a Waterloo powertrain.

Tim come up with a nice well made adapter kit to put a 219 or 239 in a 3020 and I will buy one from you. I have a friend with a 239 turbo engine in a 3020 but it is kind of a butcher job. But it runs great. Tom

I have considered a 4020 engine in this one,,looks like 4020 side frames and hood will work out,,just lengthening the oil lines,, on this LP model I will need a hood and fuel tank any way,,all should deal with the 6 cylinder engine as long as it's not hooked to a 5 bottom plow...the bell housing and clutch assembly will interchange just go with the smaller input shaft clutch disc.

Tim I have two neighbors that put JD 2840 motors on JD 3020s. That makes a real nice running tractor. You need to make the frame rails longer and lengthen the hood but I think the blocks bolted up.

My grandpa who bought his '68 3020 Gas burner in '71 or 2 said that a 3020 was more built to work row crops ie: plowing, disking and the 2510/20 was a better loader, utility tractor. He said to think of the 2510/20 as the 4000 was to the 4020. Basically a little lighter and cheaper than buying a 3020. I'm not sure that it's true.
