Car battery question

The engine went in my sons car Monday. Not worth fixing. He bought another car but a year ago he put a brand new battery in the old one. His new to him car is 5 yrs old. Would he be better off seeing if he can get half new price for the near new battery and getting a new one if/when he needs one again or would it stay good if left on a shelf for several years? It's a 72 mo warranty Car Quest. Thank you for any suggestions.

I'm not following the half new price part, but...

I would put the year old, still in warranty, battery in the new car and use it (if it will safely fit and sufficient amp rating). That way if it goes bad during the warranty, you can collect on it.

The other battery, I would put it on a tender. It should last a long time kept charged and away from extreme temperatures.

Keeping a battery at full charge and never using it will extend the life but if he doesn't need it in the new car and he can sell battery for 50% I'd sell it.

I have the same thing. A 1 year old battery sitting in the shop from my daughters old car that I got rid of. I don't think the battery is a direct fit to anything I have but can be made to work in an old tractor. Of course I just put new batteries in both of my old tractors with in the past couple of years. I will keep it charged up and see how long it will last.

Where or how would you get 1/2 price for an old battery, even if it were just one year old? That part of your post is a bit confusing. Would you buy a used battery for half of its retail price?

Just wondering what would happen if you would dump out the acid & rinse it many times with water & leave the caps off while sitting out in the sun & wind until it is completely dry? Then store it until you need it.

Not to worry, if his luck goes like mine he will be replacing the battery in the new car within a month or two anyhow. Been buying cars and trucks for 50 years and that's happened every time to me. Newest I ever bought was two years old and the same thing happened with it. Battery was the only thing on the car not under warranty. Go figure!

If the newer battery will fit in the 5 year old car, which probably still has the original battery, I would put the newer battery in, and maintain the old one somewhere as a spare.

Mentiomed about warenty. Put that battery in a different vehical that what dealer put it in and wrote on orignal paper that ends warenty. Now if it was bought as a carry out then you might get by on warenty. Same thing on tires.
