what is the good or bad of this little tractor? Did JD sell this tractor under there brand? If so what was model number? Am interested in small tractor for garden work. Thanks.

We have a JD 4600, the engine is made by Yanmar, not sure about the rest of it. I think I saw Spicer on the front axle. We bought it new, and have put over 1000 hrs on it, with no problems whatsoever. It starts well in cold weather, does not overheat in hot weather, it's the best running engine I have ever had. The rest of the tractor is very user friendly, it has a 12-12 reverser transmission. I don't know how much different a Yanmar would be.

JD did not sell yanmar tractors under JD label. They did use a lot of Yanmar engines , which are great engines. I have a Yellow Industrial JD TLB110 backhoe loader with a Yanmar engine. I was looking at a compact JD in the mid 80s and noticed a very slight difference in the shade of the paint from the casting right behind the engine forward. The dealer told me that from the transmission forward was made in Japan by Yanmar. From the transmission rearward was manufactured in the US by JD. The 2 units were put together in JD plant in US. Don't know that is what he said.

The Yanmar's are very good little tractors but John Deere did NOT sell a re-badged Yanmar they did use Yanmar engines for a number of year as posted excellent engine, also beware that 4 digit Yanmar's (1500 / 2000) are what are known as gray market tractors these tractors were never intended to be imported to the US the gauges are in Japanese and you can not get parts from a US Yanmar dealer but parts are available, one other thing the rear wheels are close together and the can be unstable but there are rear wheel spaces available that makes all the difference in the world.

and very dependable.

Sorry Bob that is not a Yanmar tractor that is a John Deere tractor built by Yanmar to John Deere specs they did use a Yanmar engine but the rest of the tractor is John Deere and besides the original poster asked about a YM200 Yanmar.

Its a Yanmar built tractor,I have a Yanmar 330 its the same tractor mechanically as a JD 950 great little tractor BTW.The JD spec thing is a myth parts interchange.

Isn't the John Deere spec a little different sheet metal to make it look like the bigger John Deere tractors being built at the time? And of course the green and yellow paint.

The YM 330 has a 91.3ci engine, while the JD 950 has a 105ci engine. But as noted, the JD machines are wholly built bu Yanmar in Japan. They are not strictly a rebadged machine, because to be that they would have had to have been for sale as a YM. The Yanmar built JD's had only a single market, that was JD.
