This was way out in woods at a
hunting club. It's fairly large.
Any ideas on age and make?

It looks a lot like it might be IH. We had an IH that looked like that. If it is International it should have the old International logo on some of casings. I would say late 40's maybe early 50's..

Back when we farmed we had a Case side delivery rake and IH. The Case had spoke rear wheels and IH had wheels like one in picture.

It looks very much like a Case 170 rake. The rear wheel towers are the same as Case used, and the gear box looks like Case. The castings should have the Case eagle emblem on them.

McCormick 3 bar enclosed gear made in late 30's to early 40's. Not many of them made as at that time McCormic started making the 4 bar that did a better job of raking so not many 3 bars were sold and discontinued about start of WW2. Think they started the 3 bar enclosed gear in 1939 and brought out the 4 bar in 1940. I still have part of one here I got in a deal of 5 rakes but it was only a parts rake for the other 4 bar units I got with it and some of the parts fit the 3 bar open gear rake-tedder of the second style built untill 1960. If I had my books handy I could give you exact ending year for that rake.

ACG you are right, I did not see that 4tyh bar at start. So it was made between 1940 and 1958. I could use some parts if they are good in my rebuilding rakes for the Amish.

It's in the middle of the woods in the middle of Alabama. I may see if land owner will let it go. I bet it's heavy?!

A couple of years ago I complete rebuilt a 170 and parted out a 160 to help with the rebuilding. Handled a couple of others. In the last 10 years I must have handled with rebuilding a lot of them at least 50 rakes of McCormick, New Idea, Case and John Deere. Also a couple of Massey harris.New Idea most wanted with McCormick second, Deere third and Case last. The Massey Haris rake is very simular and share o lot of same parts. Fact is I put the real in a McCormick befor I realized it was a MH real and not a IHC real.

We had a case & International rakes and both were 4 bar rakes and looked almost same. Like said above there should be emblems cast into some of the casting if it's IH or Case.

Total weight about a thousand pounds. What I could use if good are the bearings on the real bars, the straps that hold them on, the teeth if good and the clips that hold the teeth on and the dog plates in the front wheels. I could also use the rear wheels but they are too heavy to ship. A couple of years ago I bought some of those parts from Old down in Missouri. I am in Ohio. I work with the Amish rebuilding rakes like those In McC, NI, JD, with some Case, MM and MH thrown into the bunch. What I cannot use is the ones only made on low rubber like Oliver, David Bradley. I can use the New Idea and JD both on low rubber as a lot of parts can be used on the high steel wheel models. and I can convert those to steel if I have a parts steel wheel to use for parts.

The IH did not have model numbers, just listed as 3 or 4 bar enclosed gear or for the open gear rake-tedder. The 4 bar Case was 170 and 3 bar 160. And the Ih enclosed gear and Case could not tedd, MM if it had the reverse gear in the gear box could but most did not have that gear in there. All New Idea could ted.

Would you believe if it is taken apart it will fit in a pick up truck. The one Leroy got parts from me I took apart and have it laying on the back of a 1969 Chevy pickup. A lot of the old iron that was part of that rake has been used to repair other machines over the years as steel to weld in to make the repairs

With a tree of that size growing up in the frame yes it has been a long time. The right wheel is mashed and left wheel is gone.

contact me about usable one in south west ind. If you hurry you might get it shipped to tipton ind cheap. If interested e mail for pictures.

Definatly not a Dain, I have one here. And I have worked on over a dozen of those McCormic rakes.
