856 wont start at first?

Went to move the 856 and when I tried to start it, the starter hit once put did not turn over the engine then after that nothing happen, I had lights the oil pressure tellite and alternator-generator tellite was on but the tractor was dead I tried it several times but would not turn over. Went to the house and got my mm and jumping cables check the batteries and had 6.5 volts. Hook the cables up to jump it with the truck. Push the starter button once nothing then push it the second time and it starts right up. Any ideals what I should look for? safety starting switch, solenoid, loose wire to any of those or maybe batteries the connection at the batteries were tight? Shouldn't I have 12 volts at the solenoid?

If the dash lights went out when you tried to start it, look for a bad battery connection, loose connection, loose ground, bad cable...

If the lights stayed on while trying to crank, look for neutral switch problem, loose battery connection AT the starter, failing starter.

Do they have a clutch safety switch? Shift safety switch? Both? That's what I'd be checking.

If you have only 6.5 volts, that's likely your problem. Sounds like you might have one bad battery. I once had an 856 and my experience was if both batteries weren't in top shape, you were dead in the water. Even jumpering was only marginal, at best, if the batteries were weak.

the 06 56 and 66 series tractors used two 6 volt batteries hooked in series to get 12 volts. there is a clutch safety switch under the left side platform. sometimes those switches get out of adjustment a wire falls off or breaks sometimes the cotter pin that holds the switch actuator rod falls out and the rod falls down. if these things check out then the problem is else ware. there was an article in red power magazine earlier this year and their tractor guru said that sometimes you have to check clean and tighten every electrical connection on the starting circuit.

It is the solenoid has burned the contacts inside. Either have to open it up and turn the bolt over or replace the solenoid. BTDT. Also can be the push button as they are just a cheap switch.
