cattle scratchers

How many in YT-land have one of those broom cattle scratchers? I was wondering what are your positive and negative experiences with them? Do you have them on a post dug into the ground or do you have them on a stand for mobility? I am planning on getting one for next season but was wondering the good-bad about them, mostly about mounting them, do the cow push on them, is a mud hole created, or do you move them around. Thank you in advance for your thoughts!!

I have seen a few around here When I deliver feed. Cows seem to enjoy them. Of course you do get the mud holes at times. Haven't seen any pushed over yet.

My friend has one in his dairy barn. Cows love it. His is in the free stall barn and only turns on when a cow is near it.

I set a large I-beam with a cross piece at the level of their backs. I made certain there were no sharp edges. They love that thing and keep it shiny. They especially like the piece that is horizontal they scratch their backs on.

I have a wick with insecticid on the scratcher so that cattle transfer insecticide/fly repelant to their neck and back while scratching. My favorite set up is a heavy chain wrapped in burlap. One end is tied 5'high on a corner post, other end is tied 10'away to a screw in ground anchor. Yea,they wear the ground out around it so I move it.

I had a number of them at different times. You better have a pretty good post to set them over. Neighbors cows wore out several of them too. I always wanted to wrap one and use it as an insecticide applicator.

Kansas4110,I'd like to see a picture of cattle using that oiler. The proportions look more suitable for sheep than cattle. I believe that red bull in OP's picture would be wearing it like jewelry before the others had a chance to try it out.

It's bigger than that picture shows. I didn't run down to the pasture to photograph mine. I just found one on the internet like mine. It's called a Lewis cattle oiler.

Yes that is what it is. Thank you for your responses. da.bees I would like to see a picture of your set up. JimS I would like to see a picture of your set up, too. Billy Shafer-good to hear from your obersvations. Lazy WP, I thought about getting an 8' post and sticking about 3ft into the ground.

I made up a free-standing one to hold a sweeper roller like in your picture. I welded three pieces of oil field pipe to lie flat on the ground, each 120 degrees apart and joined in the center by a vertical piece of oil field pipe. I reinforced the joint where the pieces all come together with some short pieces of 7/8" sucker rod. The sweeper roller slips over the vertical pipe. So far, the cattle have not tipped it over. Each piece of oil field pipe is 5 feet long. The cattle really enjoy playing with it.
