Phos Chek is the red or pink flame retardant that is spread by aircraft during a fire. I was told there is a form of this that can be purchased and added to refillable pressurized water filled extinguishers. The Phos Chek product I found is a bit pricey. Is anyone aware of a similar product that is less expensive?

Looks like the homeowner formula is $75 for concentrate to make 5 gallons. The ready-to-use is $165 for 5 gallons, so the concentrate is a better deal. That does not seem expensive to me considering what it does.

I've heard of other folks trying homemade experiments trying to find a cheaper "household" alternative, but never did hear of anything exciting.

Our EMS Rescue used a product called "Cold Fire". We added to water extinguishers. Don't remember the formula been 10 yrs out of EMS. In practice we could put out a fully engulfed car with 2 extinguishers in 40 seconds and use about half of each. Not cheap $150 for 5 gal. But it took so little it lasted a long time. It was environmentally safe and left no traces (evaporated in 20 minutes.
