Chalk one up

Not very often I figure it out before everyone else, so today was a good day. At work I was in the maintenance shop making my daily visit, the
first thing I see is a pretty new looking Stihl chainsaw sitting there so I pick it up,look it over, see how it feels when the guy on the other side of
the table informs me that the chain is stuck and won't work.(don't get ahead of me on this), so I get me a wrench and start to take the clutch
cover off to see what's a matter when other maintenance guy comes by, says I already did all that clutch just won't turn. So I tighten the nuts
back up, put it down, stared at it for a second then thought, I know he released the chain brake, so I reach over give it a snap and guess what?
Chainsaw works again. He told me to go back to my lab and quit making him look silly. Apparently all his saws are as old as mine. I said the
only reason I thought of it was cause I watched a guy using a saw with a brake on it.

I had that same thing happen to me when I first got a saw with the chain brake. I bumped it without knowing it. I did call the dealer before I took it back in. He told me to check the brake out and that was it.

place i work at has 6 stihl saws. They see alot of use and abuse. I had a guy cut some little low hanging branches off. The saw sounded like it broke a rod and locked up tight. It sat in the shop until i got around to look at it. The case screws under the flywheel worked out hiting the flywheel and locked it up. A little locktite and is all good.

I did a similar thing to myself e few years ago. Had a new saw about 6 months, I was back at the woods cutting and stopped for a break, gassed and oiled it then it wouldn't restart. I was about to take it back to the dealer when my nieghbor stopped by, he looked at the saw and said you need to fill the gas with gas not oil. Duhhh I knew that LOL. It's said you can't fix stupid it's even harder to prevent especially self inflicted.

I was at Lowe's and some guy came into replace his brand new chainsaw b/c it ran one tank of gas and "locked up". He made a big scene so the guy at the desk just gave him a new saw. Once the customer left, the store employee checked the chain brake and sure enough it was on...

That was probably someone that should not have a chainsaw in the first place.

Still have at least one chain saw (about 1975) that does not have a brake. The local Stihl dealer told me recently that you are supposed to start the saw with the brake on. Never heard that before. Had not ever read the manuals, but I have done the Stihl safety DVD. OK, the Stihl manual says to use the brake "in an emergency, when starting, at idling speed". But the Echo manual says " do not attempt to start or operate the engine with the brake engaged".
