Potato Crop

I managed to grow a half decent crop of potatoes this year which is a bit surprising considering how little rain we had. I did add a little well water through the sprinklers occasionally and I know that helped. As usual I planted a little more than I need and this year I might not have many to throw out next spring.
I shot some video while I was scratching them out of the dusty dry soil back on October 1.
Digging Potatoes

I liked your spud digging video. My old potato patch was in southern Alberta, and I always had scab, even though it was unbroken native prairie when I started it. Similar varieties- Dutch Bintjes, Caribe, and blue Russian. I think my soil was too acidic, and probably phosphorous low. I'll try again next spring in some sandy loam in another area. When springtime arrives, I have this insatiable need to grow potatoes. Dad used to say I inherited it from my grandfather. unc

I enjoyed watching you work. LOL Last year I limed part of a plot I later planted potatos on. The more acidic soil had no scab, but the limed part did. The vines all looked the same.

Scab and early blight has been a problem here for years. I have been told by some that it is from too much organic matter (rotten manure from the cattle shelter) so I have not put any on the garden for quite a few years. New seed seems to help sometimes but I have not tested the theory.
It is kind of a family tradition. My dad was the potato grower in the family. And his dad before him. I enjoy the work from spring planting to fall harvest.

Here is my rig, and dug about 600lbs. Gave away most. Good exercise.
