Farmall 1066 info

Probably one of the most reliable tractors you can find of that era. Easy starting, good selection of gears, cheap parts. Don't push the clutch all the way down when shifting if it is rolling at all, hard on the trans brake. DO NOT put it in park if it is rolling, it will tear up some of the hardest to access parts of the transmission.

A generally reliable tractor. Being that they are 40 years old or more the individual history of any tractor is perhaps the most critical with such a tractor. Something that old can look pretty just sitting there idling but can need 1000's of dollars of repairs to make it a reliable worker. 6-7 thousand dollars would be plenty for a run of the mill consignment auction unit. Find out that it came from a good home with a known maintenance schedule then you can think about paying more. Perhaps one of the most critical aspects are rear tires. 20.8 X 38 Firestone radial tires are in the 1550-1600 dollar range per tire before tube and installation charges. Will this tractor do tillage or other serious drawbar loads? A 1066 better have a good previous owner history with low hours to go past paying 11-12 thousand dollars IMO.

Generally a good tractor. My father-in-law had one.

As I recall, they have a wet sleeve engine, as opposed to dry sleeve engines up until then, and the early ones had a problem with electrolysis around the sleeves. The cure was to install a coolant filter. I believe IH got it cured. Might be something to ask about.

Don't know about the 66 series, but on the 06 and 56 series tractors it was a rule of thumb that a TA had an average life of 3,000 hours.

I think they were made in the early 1970's until 1976 or 1977. The 1980's farm crisis was a tough time. For some farms to survive, money for a larger tractor was out of the question. Many 1066's were weighted down with the injection pumps turned up to do the work of a larger tractor. Condition is everything on them now. Specifications can be found in Nebraska Tractor tests #1081, #1083 and #1124.

You might find more information on the Farmall forum.

Do NOT use the T'A as a brake. only use it the way it is meant to used.
Also, be careful when shifting gears so you don't get it stuck in 2 gears at once. Shift from a dead stop only. That was a common problem with them. We had to send the service techs on a lot or calls when they got in 2 gears at once.
