OT good day

I had a nice breakfast with fellow YT'er (Ron) in Lakeville MN this morning.

It was then back to getting the big iron running on the fuel injection .The unit is now runable, and is going to start on a 72 hour run to get everything up to temperature before running tests. The unit has pre combustion chambers a lot like the old Diesels did, to shoot a flame down into the main cylinder for ignition. We can see the cylinder pressures and where they occur on the display, so that really helps. I did find it interesting that differences in the pre combustion chamber tuning caused the ignition of the main cylinder to vary.

Will probably be a full week of tuning.

So was it set up with a carburetor previously? (I know nothing about natural gas engines). With the fuel injection, is it running one injector per cylinder? What about the gas, it must be injecting it as a liquid?

It is injecting natural gas, not liquid @ about 80PSI into intake ports, with a secondary flow into the pre combustion chamber. the spark plugs are in the PCC. The unit had an extra intake valve to let the natural gas in, that was controlled by the cam. The mixture was controlled by varying the pressure of the gas. The amount of gas controlled the load, and the waste gate controlled the air to fuel mixture from the turbo. It now runs at fixed fuel pressure with electronically controlled injectors.

I worked on a two stroke version a few years ago that had direct injection @ 500 PSI.

Interesting, thanks David. My brother used to talk about the huge natural gas generators (2500 hp?) he used to work on, but I never really understood what he was talking about since I have never seen one up close
