lucas injector pump timing help

OK, I am working on ford 555E 4 cyl.--(taking over assembly where someone else left it)-yeah, I know)---Injector pump was removed for minor seal job on top cover-That parts good---installer before me marked the shaft & gear, said he maybe put it back-same spot. torqued the nut. he said pump shaft had place for key, but no keyway in gear. Ok, I see pump pin screw, so I'm gonna pin pump & set to flywheel marks. pull gear loose,turn pump thru & there is No place on pump shaft to pin to!! Turned pump thru several times--no slot or hole, visual, or feeling with icepick [the pin could not reach it if there was} what am I missing? or has my pump been designed for gear with keyway? the engine was running fine--Here is all the info I could find on pump----Lucas 1296 8920a671W 11194CSG Thank you for any help !
 
The pump will need to go to an authorized fuel shop that has the lock timing test spec setting to be set correctly. Fuel pressure is delivered to a given outlet, shaft turned until the rollers strike the cam ring. Then depending on the test spec pressure is released, and shaft turned a given degree amount in the correct direction, then the shaft locked. THEN with the engine in the correct location the pump is installed. Most newer Cummins and Perkins pump drive gears have NO key anymore even though the shaft still has the key groove. Welcome to the wonderful world of LOCK TIMING...
 
Lucas/Delphi pumps are best done with high pressure fuel, reason being air will compress, giving a false reading when the rollers strike the cam ring. Liquid fuel makes the rollers stop solid. STILL need to know which outlet to use, then which direction, and how many degrees of shaft rotation the spec sheet calls for before locking the pump shaft in place. Info the pump shop may or may not give out..
