Gas up before you come to California

Starting No1 we will be paying, starting out at 12 cents per gal gas, and 20 cents for diesel. Only to go up as the years go on. Then on top of that we get wacked with a new registration fee 56.00 to DMV, and 24.00 to the Highway patrol. I doubt many will coming out west. I believe California will have some new people in government next election. Trouble is hardly no one knows what is happening in this state. A lot are more interested in where they can get their marijuana. Jan 1 we can grow up to 6 plants. What a mess this state is in. Stan

sadly I have a daughter that still lives in San Diego, I was smart enough to get out 30 years ago when it just started to go down hill. Been back a few times to visit but will probably never see my daughter again as I will not go back and odds are she will not come to Oklahoma. California was a great place to live in the 60's, 70's and before but now you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

So what is total registration fee for 3 yr old car or 1/2 ton pickup? In Wis it is 75.00 per year for car and 101.00 for dual purpose plates for pickup.

You just have too many people out there that want a abundant lifestyle. The high price is suppose to make people think of alternative transportation or at least more fuel efficient vehicles. It's another reason so many are moving here to Texas. I hope they leave their ideas there.

"starting out at 12 cents per gal gas, and 20 cents for diesel."

Just grit your teeth and hang around for another 10-12. Because isn't California going to ban the internal combustion engine by 2030? LOL!

That sounds very cheap. My 2005 Buick cost me 134.00 My 2004 1/2 ton truck cost me 154.00. My 1967 Mustang coupe cost me 28.00

I think he meant to say 12 cents per gallon increase. And maybe it's for a specific purpose, like weed for the homeless. But the post does not say that.

I couldn't agree more. As a "native" Californian I once thought it was the only place to live but eventually it became too much
for me. We left in 1992 and don't miss it at ALL. I still have family there but they're as politically wacky as the bulk of the
voting population there so we don't communicate much any more. Can't see any reason I would ever move back.

What do you expect from a sanctuary state? Some one has to pay and it won?t be your wet nursed illegal population. Governor Moonbeam really has Weedafornia screwed up.

omeone has suggested that they hurry up & secede before they can ask the rest of us to bail them out. Sounds good to me!

California is actually one of the states that is bailing out many of you whiners that complain so much, but I'm sure you will call it fake
news.

Well Russ, a guy has to look at it this way. Winter is approaching and a number of the tractor community at YT are in need of an excuse to be mean, ugly and condescending to others who look, dress, and think differently than they do. Sort of a mild version of online bullying. Not the first time this has happened here, it happens all the time unfortunately.

I don't necessarily agree with a lot of the politics of California. I am over 50 years old, but for about as long as I can remember, the jokes I heard with reference to California were "the People's Republic of California." I had the chance to listen to a presentation about the state of the roads and bridges in Minnesota about half a dozen years ago. It was rather concerning listening to what was said and what was shown in the presentation. I suspect this is similar to a lot of other places in this country. We have an aging infrastructure and it doesn't matter if we are talking about roads, bridges, public water supply systems, public wastewater treatment systems, telecommunications systems, power distribution systems, etc. There was a lot of money spent in this country building all this infrastructure. The interstate highway system was promoted heavily during the Eisenhower administration in the late 1950's, as an example. There are a lot of these systems which have "seen better days." Highway funding dollars come from fuel surcharge taxes and license fees. As fuel economy increases in our individual vehicles, the amount of money put towards highways gradually decreases. I will add that I remember when a lot of rail lines were abandoned, vacated, and removed, further putting a strain on our nation's roads with a lot of this replaced with truck hauling. By no means do I place blame on trucks or truckers. Our transportation system has evolved and the demands upon it have evolved and changed, too. I think we can safely say we, as Americans, probably drive more than we ever have, too. I suspect we are going to see this entire tax structure shift some, too. I suspect we are going to see at some time, some sort of "consumption tax" or "user fee/tax" on consumer goods and services, whereby those who use more of these tangible and intangible items will pay more, while those who use less, will pay less. I believe all states have an obligation to have a balanced budget, thus reducing the possibility of doing what our federal government does in borrowing and spending more than it takes in. Like it or not, our federal government is at $20 trillion in debt and still growing. This same sort of mentality cannot be sustained indefinitely and the most likely result will be an increase in tax revenues and some spending cuts in order to start getting our fiscal house in order. Do I like paying taxes and fees any more than the next guy? Absolutely not! I would like to see a United States of America for generations to come and I recognize it WILL take some "belt tightening."

The DMV fee is on top of what we already pay. The fee is for new registration one time only. My old 54 chevy truck is 253.00 each year, as an example of license fees. Stan

I know next to nothing(!!) about such financial things between states, but I have to wonder if all things are taken into account. I remember fairly recent wildfires in Texas where they were needing financial help due to all the damage, yet it didn't seem as though that help came. California, on the other hand, has lots of wildfires every year and, in return, gets much aid from Uncle Sam.

Going back to Texas and other Gulf Coast states, add in the costs due to hurricanes. Some years back there was that bridge collapse in/near Minneapolis. The list goes on and on, and I have a difficult time accepting that one small article can properly put everything in focus. The article already showed three different aspects, but aspects that showed in the light they wanted to show in. Could other aspects show just as favorably in the other direction? Again, I don't know....but it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

This is something I've seen used on both sides for a long time - picking and choosing the information that "they" want to use, and ignoring information they don't want. ...Sorta like telling a.......no, it IS telling a half-truth -- and that's when the facts haven't been "doctored". Again, both sides have done that, so I'm not trying to show up one side or the other - just telling it as I see it. Just this one subject (state-to-state and state-to-federal finances) goes so far over my head it's ridiculous, much less trying to follow and keep up with all the other subjects.

"....picking and choosing the information that "they" want to use, and ignoring information they don't want." That is what the politicians & others game us with all the time!

That's exactly why I "don't follow in politics! It'd be different if there were reliable, accurate sources that were impartial to all sides, but offhand, I don't know of any. Can't spend all my time fact-checking.

There used to be a saying in the court system; "[i:13445da721]the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth[/i:13445da721]". What that's saying is, even if all the information given IS true, if even one other thing is left out, then it's no longer "The Truth". I spent most of my life being someone you could trust "most" of the time! Well, that don't cut it. Still working on it, and imagine I always will, but I try to find the truth in everything. Sadly however, the world is a much uglier place the deeper I dig. So now I just try to keep up with my little corner of the world - which is much smaller now than what it was a few decades ago.

I don't mind so much paying road use tax, until like in Iowa they use road use tax to fund bike trails at the expense of letting the roads deteriate.

Unfortunately that hits the poorer folks, who drive older less efficient vehicles and drive longer distances to work. Raising the licence tabs in proportion to vehicle value might be more fair.

I guess I'm not seeing the "bailout", I'm seeing out of control Federal government spending that happens to be more in certain states than others. If we really want fair then lets not collect any Fed tax except for military spending and let the taxpayers keep it in their pocket and have each state tax and decide what to spend in the state.
