Paint Over Rust

The "new to me" John Deere 2140 has some rust damage to the rear rims around the valve stem. Typical of tractors that have had calcium chloride in them for their entire life. They really packed it in as I could not get the valve stem high enough to remove the core without liquid gushing out on the floor. Lucky I have a dirt floor. I found a decent enough used valve stem to replace the rusty one, then went to work with the sand blaster and sprayed a little rustoleum yellow on to cover it up. When I finished I noticed the valve stem on the other side was leaking too. :-(

good job, as it all starts with the valve stem everyone ignors. all it takes is to replace the stem for a few dollars and save the rims. then they complain about the calcium rusting rims.

Nice job. Rustoleum is pretty good stuff. Ten years ago or so I painted a rusty old water tank with black Rustoleum. The plan was to make it look good for only a few years. I did no surface prep whatsoever, I shot the paint over the rust, dirt, spider nests, everything. Today it still looks pretty good with very little rust showing. It’s not a fair comparison to your rims though because this tank wasn’t exposed to cal chlor.

(quoted from post at 20:04:57 10/28/17) ooh no, just noticed you got paint on the tires. yikes.
Good eye. i was pretty sure somebody would notice that. I did not bother with masking the tire so there was a little over spray on the rubber. After it dried up some I went to work with steel wool on the tire and it took the paint off pretty well. Those are original Goodyears made in Germany. 1981. Looks like lots of life in them yet as long as I don't drive on something sharp like a deer antler.

I use a piece of sheet metal(aluminum coil stock) and cut a curve to match
wheel and hold it agaist the tire to catch overspray.

The real problem is the rust will soon come back. You won't have a permanent solution until you remove the tire from the rim and clean it down to bare metal inside and out and prime it with an epoxy primer.

Good on you for fighting the rust! I have been pleased with the Rustoleum rusty metal primer, but for anything that I put significant prep into I give it a good Phosphoric acid treatment in order to kill those tiny bits of rust that are still lurking deep in scratches and pits.

I'd have the tire pulled of to work on the inside of the rim, could be nothing there or could be 4X as much damage as on the outside.CaCl rusted metal is some of the worst to get cleaned up and the rust stopped.

If you want to end your rust problems, remove tires and tubes from rims and sandblast rims to bare steel
inside and outside, epoxy prime and color coat, then install brand new innertubes into tires, and inflate
with AIR.

From my experience with rim rust I don't think I need to worry about these in my lifetime. I've seen far worse. I doubt the inside has any rust at all. Would you believe I had a 2390 Case with the big 16.5x16s up front. They were tubeless with chloride in them. When I removed the tires to replace they must have been 15 years old and the rims were clean and rust free, inside and out.
As much as I hate rust, this 2140 needs the weight for traction. It would cost a fortune to replace that chloride with cast iron so I don't see myself changing unless the tires ever need replacement. At that point I might consider some alternative.
