correct position for initial installation of distributor prior to timing engine.

The correct position is so the contact on the rotor is pointing at the #1 post on the distributor cap when the engine is at TDC on the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder.

I think some of the Wisconsin 4 cylinders were uneven fire. Therefore, look at the cam lobes in the distributor and see if they are evenly spaced. If so, it is easier to time. If uneven it is HARD to time. I could be wrong.

Yes, some are "odd-fire".

It would have been nice if the O.P. would have posted the model #!

At the link below, armed with the model #, he should be able to find the manual for his engine, which will have detailed timing instructions.

I agree TDC is where it should be. But where is number 1 on what engine. Model and serial number helps allot.
