speedometer going crazy, 87/Toyota pickup

A few days ago I started driving and the speedometer would go from 0 to 100 mph over and over. After I drove a while it finally started working right. What caused this and what is the fix?

I would suspect that at the age of the vehicle, it probably still used a cable instead of electronic. That would point to a cable that is going dry on the inside.
Assuming it has a cable, try disconnecting it behind the dash and then pull out the inner core. Lube that with either some light grease or oil. That should quiet it down.
If, and only if, the speedometer is electronic, that would then indicate that the sensor would be the most likely problem.

I have a 1988 Toyota pickup (motorhome) and it always does that when it is super cold out. Also makes a little noise when doing it. Once I drive for awhile and it warms up, it stops and works fine. It is the bushing in the speedometer itself, in the dash. All mechanical.

Speedometer head is most likely wearing out with a bad bushing. The only true fix is to replace the speedometer head. You may get a few more years out of it by cleaning and lubing it. BTDT

The only time I had that issue it was with the speedometer cable. I removed it from the vehicle and pulled the cable out of it and cleaned and oiled it. The sleeve I blew out with compressed air.

Pull the inner cable out, clean and lube sparingly with some kind of light grease, and the way the head gets lubed is with a squeeze bulb tool with a light oil like maybe Marvel Mystery Oil.
