Neat trick with shaving cream

I bring this up because I recently wanted to read the serial # stamped on side of my new-to-me 9N. Couldn't make it out against the dark metal of the engine block. Here is something that often works:

Smear a glob of foamy shaving cream over the stamping.
Wipe it off.
The cream will embed in the stamping and it will be outlined in white--it will almost jump out at you.

Learned this from a Civil War historian trying to get info from old gravestones. If this has been covered before, plz disregard.

,. i just learned that from my neighbor who has a jetstar molene with a worn tag last yr ,.until then i used shaving cream for ,.. Well Shaving !, and halloween pranx ..////ALSO side note ...worx great for cleaning up incontinance issues too ,,. my Sara did home health care for years ,, and was a caregiver, also took care of mentally retarded,.. those folx often had accidents

Great idea..another one is freezing a can of shaving cream and then cutting the can open and remove the frozen cream, and place in your buddys dorm room! ( just remember paybacks are hell)

Shaving cream was used by Genealogists to read the inscriptions on old headstones but many people do not like this method as they
claim it does long term damage to the headstones.

I have done similar on old rusty rafter squares and other tools. Clean
them up with a wire brush then use paint on a rag to wipe into the
indentations wiping off excess.

Shaving cream is pretty mild stuff, you put it on your skin, after all. Can't imagine what is in it that would damage [b:93570b2e4b]rock[/b:93570b2e4b]. Plus, the first good rain and it'll be gone. Be interesting to see what evidence there is for that claim.

Best trick with shaving cream is to fill an envelope with it, put the open side of the envelope under your buddy's dorm room door, then stomp on the part still sticking out. Gives a good pattern all over the room.

Correct! It is just soap, and very mild soap at that.

OH, but do not use that awful, DANGEROUS stuff called Talcum Powder...(Sheesh, they will sue over anything)..

We were going to use it under the door handles of friend of ours who got married. Relatives of his grabbed the can and wrote stuff on the car.

Could see what they wrote 4 years later on the car, sure affected the paint. We felt kinda bad, tho it was not our doing or intent for that to
happen, we were planning to be pretty inconspicuous and hidden on the deal......

Isn't there just a tad bit of solvent type stuff in to make your skin tighten up, it might have some mild effect on a very polished stone surface?
