You've read about them before and seen them
on the History Channel.
5 ships at the Palawan Passage - 3 Japanese
heavy cruisers and 2 US submarines.
But it's an interesting story and exciting
to read again.
The photos are the Darter stuck on the reef
and full of shell holes,
Then Maya, Takao and Atago.

Palawan passage

I cannot claim to be near as brave nor have the endurance that those lads did in WWII, but I did ride on a couple of their boats and sleep in their bunks 1960-64 aboard USS Atule SS403 and USS Balao SS285. Many of my chiefs wore war patrol dolphins. I was a Torpedomans Mate Second (E-5) working mostly on the old Mk 143a steam torpedo of WWII vintage. All of the diesel-electric subs were replaced in the early 1970's by nucs. However, we held the line and did our duty 'till they all came on-line. I could tell some tales about the Cuban Missile Crises in 1963 while stationed in Key West in SUBRON 12!

I believe that is the same class of sub as one called the USS LING on display in the Hackensack River at a naval museum. I took the tour and there is no way I could do a submarine duty.

Thanks for linking. Was a interesting read. Would be something to sail through there and see that sub hull perched up on the reef.
