Hay is plenty dry too

I mowed 4 acres of alfalfa hay Tuesday night, baled yesterday. Was actually a little too dry when I baled it, about 1:30pm start. I mowed some grass hay 3 weeks ago and that was the latest I had every tried it here, in York county. Until yesterday of course. Small squares. For horses. Really nice drying weather.

Are you planning on tearing out the alfalfa??? Anytime I mow alfalfa this late it destroys the stand for the next year.

No. It is 2nd year. But it has a bunch of Canada thistle in it, which was about 1 foot tall. So, if the stand fails, then away it goes. I ripped up another 4 acre field 2 weeks ago and seeded orchard grass and Timothy. I guess I am experimenting. I have been baling grass / alfalfa hay for the horse market for about 20 years. It is just tricky to grow and bale nice. Straight grass is so much easier.
