John Deere 4010 steering

I have a 1961 JD 4010 diesel and when I start the engine I have to turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and wait before the steering starts to slowly turn to the right. After the front wheels go to the right then I can turn left and right with not problems. Is this a sticking valve or something like that in the steering assembly. Rear hydraulics are fine as soon as you start up, just the steering is the problem.[/b]

Sounds as if o-ring has failed on piston in steering motor under fuel tank. Frt axle will require removal to access spindle for removal. You need support frt of tractor & also remove a side frame to access a plug to access failed o-ring by removing piston(key 22). Upon reassembly spindle requires timing to piston(key 15). O-ring kit is AR52016 & seal is R34748

Yes sounds just like my 3020 when I got it. New o-rings and seal in the steering motor fixed it. I have done two and
it is pretty easy. Just have to take a lot of things apart to get it out.

Ok... thanks for the info and the diagram. Everyone has confirmed what an retired tractor mechanic told me that the O-rings and seal failed in steering motor.

It can be a combination of worn seals in the steer valve,,and worn o-rings in the steer motor,,I would reseal the motor first, they are probably original,,if the problem continues then remove the steer valve and ship it to my to reseal and calibrate, along with a bench test to prove it..I can walk
