OT Beautiful Area

I am working near Duluth this week on a liquid natural gas storage system.

It has been in the 60s, trees are great, has been a real pleasure.

I am enjoying being here, bet that will change in a month.

Don't remember what time of the year when we went to the Mall of America and then spent the next day in Duluth, was bone chilling cold there. We went through an old ship, did a couple other things and headed back to balmy Illinois. For some reason I'm fascinated with those big nasty old ships and the Great Lakes, about due for another trip to the Sioux St. Marie locks.

We spent 4 days there in August years ago. Beautiful place - but when the gales of November come early...

Can't imagine it in the depths of winter.

I have worked road construction in Duluth alot over the years. It is a very scenic and interesting place to work. I was working next to the lake on the 3rd of July in the eary 90's. It was cloudy and the wind was coming off the lake, it was 40 something degrees with wind chill. Finished the day went and home for the 4th, thirty miles south had to turn the air conditioner on.

One of the greatest books I've ever read was written just north of the Duluth area. [i:69001ff049]A Place in the Woods[/i:69001ff049], by Helen Hoover. If anyone likes to read and likes nature-type reading, this should be on your list.

Right next door in Superior, WI, there is a WW2 museum pretty much dedicated to Richard Bong who grew up a little east of there with a P-38 and much more. He was an ace killed flying one of the first F 80 jets that flamed out on him on takeoff in California.

It's been a few years since I was up there.
If you are driving home you'll probably take I-35 back down through The Cities?
Shoot me an email. I'll buy you a cup of coffee on your way through.

I've only been there once. Had a reunion with the in laws about an hour south of there and decided that since I'd never seen the great Lakes we should go through Duluth. The day before we left home the heat index was 117?, on the interstate between Minneapolis and Duluth the temp was still in the upper 90's. When we dropped down into Duluth the hot air mixed with the cold lake waters made such a thick fog that I've still never seen the great lakes. The town seemed nice and we stopped by the harbor to let the kids play on a park, the temp was in the low 70's at this point and with the fog blocking out the sun I sat there and shivered the whole time. I'd like to go back sometime and try it again though.

Did Mark Twain said the same thing about a summer in San Francisco?

The railroad museum in Duluth is excellent. The zoo is very good as are the parks. A boat tour of the harbor is interesting if you are not familiar with shipping. Two Harbors, Splitrock light house, Gooseberry falls and Grand Marais are some of our favorite stops along the North Shore. We like to stay at the Edgewater on the lake side of the lift bridge and get a lake side room.
