Internal Engine & Head Parts - Where to Buy Reasonably

Where do you guys get your internal parts? I have several tractors to rebuild the heads and called about the valvetrain components for a IH 424 gas (C-146 engine) and the machine shop said they can't get the parts (discontinued with their supplier). I checked with this site and they have them for over $160 for the valvetrain set. external link has the set for $150. I will go with them if nothing else available, but I know they get theirs from somewhere and i know they've got that kit marked up pretty good. Would be nice to find the parts much more reasonable so the total labor and parts cost at the machine shop doesn't eat me alive. Especially since I'm wanting to rebuild around 5 heads every couple of months. I also tried RockAuto.com already and no go.

Valve guides usually fit a variety of
applications, I can order them through my
local CarQuest. I just measure them, and
they look through their books and see what
guides will work by dimension. Any engine
shop should be able to get seats by
dimension, and I have found it is cheaper
in some cases to have custom valves built.
Exhaust valves for my 1850 gas were almost
$70 each. I had the engine shop RRLund's
boy used to work for measure them up and
they ordered custom made Manley swirl
polished, straight stem valves for me,
instead of the normal Oliver with the
stepped stem. Cost? $20 each, and a much
better valve.
 
Really doesn't sound too out of line in
today's prices, yes there's markup that
how retail works, but not out of line at
all compared to more common production
engines.
 
ytmag is in the business of selling parts, but they provide this
nice forum for free. If you want the cheapest parts, look
around and find them. But asking here doesn't seem right.
