I just bought a 58 Ford 601.My Dad had a 641 that was a great little tractor. Can someone tell me the difference between
them? This one has an unusual 5 speed transmission.Nuetral is up and down instead of sideways like the 641 my Dad had.

Not unusual at all, every Ford 5 speed was that way, both transmission pto such as X5X number models, and also live pto 5 speed which would be X6X models. A good transmission, works well for loader work going second to reverse, reverse is a touch fast for brushogging and such but workable.

601 is the series(600,601,800,801,900,901 are the series). A 641 IS a 601, as is a 651, 661. 641 will have 4 gears and reverse. 651 will gave 5 gears. 661 has 5 gears and independent pto. (I THINK!)

Actually third and reverse are at the top of the gate.

Still works well for FEL work.

The *6* models have live PTO rather than independent PTO.

Only the S-O-S models of the era have independent PTO.
