Thanks for all your reply . This is a Ford diesel 4500 I replaced all hoses on the loader and installed quick disconnects to the backhoe. As I wanted to remove the hoe for hose replacement . With the hoses disconnected tractor would not start. Reconnection of hoses and it starts right up

You need to hook the hose together to make a loop in the Hyd. system.
The oil needs to circulate.

The open center system requires a path to the reservior to allow the hydraulic fluid to have a path (it is always pumping). with no
place to go, the starter motor was trying to spin the pump against a closed output. It struggled to pump fluid against the
pressure relief valve and absorbed 2/3 of the energy of the starter motor. Jim

You had better be glad it did not start would have either damaged the pump or blown a line. As the others have posted has to have the loop for that positive displacement pump to send the oil.

perfect example of lack of information in the first post. no one had a clue what you were referring to or even what tractor. always state what was done prior and give all info you you have on hand.lots of these problems are self induced by many out there.thank you.

thanks rustred for commenting with less sarcasm then I would have, 12 posters time was wasted attempting to answer a question that didn't have enough information as I previously stated.

Hook the hoses together on the TRACTOR side, not the backhoe side. Hooking them together on the backhoe side would be a colossal waste of time.

On modern small TLB's they usually use one male and one female coupler on the tractor side, and the reverse of that on the backhoe side, so you can easily connect the hoses together on the tractor side and prevent problems.
