Your thoughts

The Ford or David Brown for sure. Between
those two it would depend on use and what
model they are. The Ford came in several
configurations.

What's the job? Is the 5000 a row crop or utility? I don't have anything against the DB really, but I wouldn't put it in the same class as the other two.
The TA and the future of it,in the 560 would concern me.

The ford is a utility model, about 5k hours, would be pulling a Vermeer 504f baler, chisel plow and a haybine when I buy one.
The 990 David Brown looks good, but has a few non critical issues, like lights, brake lock handle, and have to add a kit to make it dual remotes.
Looking at 2 different 560s, one has the t/a and the second one supposedly has just a straight 5 speed in it. The second one is getting the PTO clutches and tranny fixed. It has a loader on it.

The first 560 has a loader, had the head gasket replaced, rebuilt injectors, new glow plugs and both lift cylinders rebuilt.

Ford hands down. More power than the DB and newer than the 560. A lot handier tractor
as well. Ben

Run from the IH. That design of those diesels that started on gasoline and then switched to diesel were notorious for cracked heads.

560 were straight diesels. The older gas/diesels were a pretty tough tractor, and good heads are getting hard to find if they Crack, and due to the design, are harder to repair. Ben

Yes, I was wrong on that, Ben! I was thinking of the 450/550. Good heads were hard to find 25 years ago, so I can imagine how scarce they would be now.

The 5000 is quite a lot more tractor than the 990. I own and love my DB 990, but the 5000 is one fine tractor. The baler and haybine would be fine on the 990. The chisel, that's where the 5000 is going to walk right away from the 990. OTOH, the 990 is a real fuel miser and a darn solid rig, nimble too. If HP is one of your criteria the 5000 simply wins.

We're assuming the 5000 is a straight gear drive and not a Selcto-speed, right?

I recommended a tractor ONCE. But, if it was for me, I would not even look at any except the 560's. You said International, but I think you may have meant IH Farmall 560 as the Internationl version is the standard or wheatland.

I can't say enough about the DB 990's, but I have to agree with Bret, that a Ford 5000 was More tractor and just as trouble free. Both are like the Ever Ready Buney,
Forget the IH 560, it will be a cumbersome money pit for your needs.

560 does not have that engine, has a d282 ih engine, now it also cracked heads pretty common. Direct start no gas involved.

If nothing else, I would take the Ford just for the fact that if parts are needed, they will be a lot easier to find. More Ford mechanics around than DB guys too.

The 5000 Ford hands down, will work circles around
the others, I know from experience, my 5000 is my
do everything workhorse.......

What are you going to do with the tractor and what is the cost differential? Ford is larger tractor if big is all you need then you can buy an 8000 for less than a 5000.In my area the DB 990 will cost about half or less than the 5000 so that'd be a consideration for me.I wouldn't buy the 560 unless it was dirt cheap.

Just noticed you were going to be pulling a chisel plow and a baler, seriously a Ford 8000 would be the better choice,5000 doesn't really have the ponies to pull much of a chisel
plow like it should be pulled.

ha ha, he asked about the 560 international... 282 is not that bad of an engine if you know anything about diesel's, and it would be the best on fuel. but what ever turns your crank.

Prices are tentatively ford 4,500. 560 #1 3500. 560#2 is 5,800. High semi arid here, other than bottom land only recommended to go no more than 6 inches deep plowing. Lots of shale close to surface. Thanks for all the input.

Don't believe you can go wrong with the Ford 5000 , unless it has been poorly cared for..

While I think the Ford is a better tractor the Farmall 560 as a row crop is more suited to what you want to do. I wouldn't be afraid of either. If you were not planning on straddling windrows of hay I'd say go with the Ford.
