I am trying to upgrade to a tractor with a loader. I really like the ford powermaster 861. Is there a better tractor that would fit my needs? I am looking at spending around $4500.00

The 861 is a great tractor and could have power steering.
If it does, it would fit your needs.

Better tractors? Yes. Even in the Ford line up.
Any of the industrial series, like a 335 would have a heavier
duty front axle better suited for loader work than an AG tractor.

An industrial around here would be within your price range even
with the loader already installed, but may or may not have PTO
and 3 PT hitch. Those components were optional.
They could be bought in either gas or diesel, live PTO or not.
4, 6 or 8 speed transmissions, dif-lock, etc. Many refinements.

Whatever you do, make sure it has working power steering. As was said, an industrial makes a better loader tractor. Some industrial's came with 3pt hitches.

Those Fords are great little tractors, but ALL of them are too light on the rear. Add a front end loader and you will be frustrated. Wheel weights are highly recommended, along with liquid ballast in the rear tires.

It isn't just Fords. ALL tractors need weight added to the rear when a loader is installed.

ive used a 2000 industrial with a ford loader which belongs to a friend, it saves hauling my jd to his place, its works well even though the bucket is kind of small. i think the industrial has slightly different gearing and hydraulic systems from the row crop tractor . like mentioned power steering is a must, you will hate a loader on a manual steering tractor

Ok, I found a Ford 3000 with ford loader. Original owner with 2550 hrs. It has the 8 speed transmission with 2 reverse, differential lock & power steering. The tires are in excellent shape. Sheet metal is in good shape. Not sure of the year yet. Seller is asking $5400.00 dollars. Is this a good price in Michigan?

Don't know about Michigan but that price is about right in Oklahoma for a diesel. I have a 3000 with a Ford loader and wouldn't sell it for less than 5. Has done me well for what I have needed maintaining gravel drive and moving dirt. I would see if he would take 5 and jump on it. If it's gas offer a bit less.
