JD 2955 not going into reverse

I'm looking at a JD 2955 to purchase. Everything on it looks & works good except that it will not go into reverse. It does not come out of forward. You can put the shift lever in the reverse position but when you release the clutch it goes forward.
I was wondering if anyone might know is this is probably just a linkage problem, or an expensive transmission problem.

Does it only go into the one forward range? I assume it goes into all gears? I'd suspect a shift rail problem or
something along those lines, but without more diagnosis and actually getting into it, it's really hard to say. I'd want
to buy it really cheap.

I think it is staying in low range only, but not sure. Regardless of which range selection it was in & you went forward, the engine rpm never changed. (it didn't bog down like trying to start in high range) & I didn't drive it that far.
When you felt the linkage tabs under the cab that are attached to the rods going into the rail, it feels like it is snapping in gear.
And yes, the price is real cheap. Especially for the shape the tractor is in, (except for the not going into reverse problem). I could spend several thousand dollars fixing the problem & still have a good deal.

The end of the shift rail is broken, a common issue on these, and with the not feeling the hi/low shift, low trans pressure or failed seals in the hi/low is a strong possibility. When this style tractor is good they are great..but when they are bad they are "very"bad,,it would be foolish to buy one that needed repair..when they are worn out they will not stay fixed..

Well you can spend several tens of thousands getting one them fixed after they start to have issues. I like them but will not buy one for any amount that needs transmission or hydraulic work.

The Hi-Lo not working is a $3000-3500 repair just in itself as usually the housing in the Hi-Lo is bad when they go out. It is rarely just the piston seals.

The shift rail issue is not that bad for parts cost but the labor is 4-5 times the cost of the parts.

If it is cheap enough buy it for the motor. Then put that in a 3020/4020 gas tractor and you have a good reliable tractor.
