WD 45 transmission

I have a late 54 model WD 45 with a rounded tooth slider for first gear. So it pops out of first on a load. I have seen posts about going thru the pumpkin to pull out the gears, but I was wondering if it would be easier to remove the bolts holding the tranny on the differential and rolling back the whole rear end. This should expose the gears with the tranny still attached to the torque tube..

My son and I have our WD45 apart now just as you suggested as we had to cure a leak by replacing the gasket between the hand clutch and transmission. In my opinion it was much easier to do that rather than going through the pumpkin.

Thank you for that. Tell me what if anything you did to keep everything in alignment so that it slides back together. I once saw a photo where long pilot bolts or rods were used so that when the wheels were rolled back everything stayed straight.

To pull it apart we first used a homemade stand for the front part. Then we attached an engine picker, the type guys use to remove engines from cars and trucks for the rear. By carefully prying it slowly it remained level and when we put it back together we used some six inch bolts to help guide it. We had very little trouble with it that way.
