OT-f-600 brake adjuster

Hello--on a 1984 ford-600 rear brakes,[hydraulic] can anyone tell me how to back them off? they are self-adjuster starwheels, & has the parking spring brake that is released by its own 'power steering' type pump. there must be a tab or something that rides on that star wheel. but darn if I can see it. I have a bore-scope, can't get it there--thanks for any help!!

ok, I got it. turns out this star wheel doesn't have the spring loaded tab as I thought. it was just stuck bad. got one to back off enough to remove duals/drum. oh to keep it tractor related,my IH 300u with small bucket on the fel, makes a dandy wheel dolly-----

Yes there is a tab on the back but it allows you to rotate the star wheel either way without taking pressure off tab. Stick the straw of your favorite penetrating oil in there and spray the threads and anything else you can. You can clean it up after you get wheel off. then with a break tool or sharpened flat bar as wide as the slot, start turning star wheel. I think usually they loosen turning from outside to inside but could be opposite. Once you get it off and see which way loosens, draw yourself a chart and throw it in glove box. I actually paint arrows on backing plate showing which way loosens.

Rule of thumb on self adjusting brakes.
The arm that turns the star wheel is located between the star wheel and the brake drum.
The arm lifts when the brakes are applied and when it comes back down if there is room for adjustment is will turn the wheel a click or two.
If you picture this in your mind then it will be obvious which way the star wheel needs to be turned to back off the brakes.
A small screwdriver or pick can usually be used to push the arm away from the star wheel to allow you to turn the wheel to back off the shoes.

On the old style that had two bolts with cams to set the shoes the way I would remember which way to turn the bolts was picture two wrenches one on each bolt pointing at 12 o'clock, move the 12 o'clock ends of the wrenches away from each other to tighten the shoes.

Somebody tell me if I am right or wrong, but I usually take a side grinder and grind that ridge off before I put the drums back on.

you have what they call LUCAS GERLING brakes and they are JUNK JUNK, and very expensive to buy parts for if you can find them anymore

you are correct they have the star washers, but they are not self adjusters, that is how you adjust the brakes there are two sets on each wheel, you are not gonna wana hear this but they can freeze and I have seen people have to cut the drums off to get to the brakes ,I just did a set on a F700 about 3 years ago, I was lucky and was able to get drums off, Good luck in finding another drum if needed, and make sure you brake chamber is released before attempting to back off brakes

yep, you are right. it is the lucas gerling setup. I did get it apart, looks like the whole darn wheel cylinder piston is what does the 'self-adjust'. it has a ratchet setup on the bottom.- means the piston has to rotate to self-adjust-.. a 'kit' isn't too bad pricewise, IF the bore will hone out--whole cylinder, new seems to be $300 < more or less

used to be they didn't want you to put anything on the adjuster threads, dry, if you use anything make sure it's high temp anti seize.
