JD 6620 combine hydrostatic transmission oil selection???

When John Deere says in the owners manual to use it's oil in the hydro part of the JD 6620 combine transmission is there a "like" substitute commonly available or should the John Deere hydro oil be used exclusively? Just wondering. To date I have topped the hydro tank off with the recommend John Deere oil. Thanks.

Well I only use JD low viscosity Hyguard in my hydrostatic transmissions. I am sure there are other brands that will work. For no more than they use though I just will keep using OEM. A new/rebuilt hydrostat is well over $2500 now. So a life time of saving a few dollars each change would not pay for a repair caused by the wrong oil.

Thanks JD Seller. That is sort of what I thought. Sometimes you just don't have it on the shelf at the farm.

I prefer to use OEM oil as well but ATF Type F is in the book and I have used that in a pinch. Please note that I said Type F and not the other formulations such as Dextron.

NY986 the original oil was Texaco Type "F" transmission fluid. Some of the older service manual told you to use that if JD hydrostatic fluid was not available.
