68 case 580 starting problems

Good compression might mean 130PSI. we need to know what you are getting. Methods of taking the readings, and gauge accuracy make
some difficulty. Uniformity is a better indication of quality than total compression value. Is it using oil measurable by
constant smoke? Is it fouling plugs? Tell us more. Jim

yes it does use oil plugs seem good but they are older might just replace them. I can usually tell when it's getting compression it will start right up. But if I flood it when trying to start then it's hard to get the compression back

Older plugs foul with gasoline and cause hard starting. Put in new (one number hotter) and be happy. Jim

what do you mean by one number hotter the plug in it now is a d15y motercraft belive I'll have to go look

Hotter plugs can burn off deposits and keep a tractor operating well into the future. The heat range is determined by the plug number and is in a series from cold to hottest.
Another possibility to reduce oil consumption is to try a synthetic oil in the 15-40 category diesel grade oil (no issue using it in a gas engine). Jim

thanks Jim I'll try changing the plugs and using the different oil. I'll let you know what happens

I think you may be using the word "compression" to mean something else.

When the tractor "loses compression" as you say, what, exactly, happens? How do you "get it back?"

The only reason a tractor would actually be "losing compression" is if one or more valves sticks open. In that case the tractor would sound different as you cranked the engine over, and may actually crank faster.

This might help us in giving you some more useful tips on nursing that old tractor along. Ideally the engine should probably be overhauled but it's probably not worth the expense based on the overall value of the tractor and how much you actually use it. It may be more cost effective to find another tractor when this one gets so bad it won't go anymore.

when she runs it runs great not sure if I'm losing compression it not just won't start. I belive it keeps flooding
