Changing oil in my Farmall 706 diesel with the glow plug 282 engine. Have both a heavy duty detergent diesel 30 wt. and Mobil Delvac 1300 15 - 40- wt. oil on hand. Will anyone of these actually perform better or will both work equally well in this engine?? Sometimes I wonder if the 30 wt. maintains its viscosity better than the 15 - 40. Thanks for your suggestions.

These days it's 15/40 fleet diesel for everything.I mean EVERYTHING. Lawnmowers, motorcycles, cars, trucse, gas and diesel tractors.Includeing my 706 with 13000 hrs.One oil on the place keeps things simple.Been that way for atleast 30 years,Never lost an engine

It kinda matters where you live. Using straight 30 weight in International Falls is probably not a great idea, but would be fine in Tucson.

Delta has the answer. Multi Wt. oil is a mature and positive answer. 15 40 is thicker when hot than the 30wt. go for it. Jim

Brutus Just wondering why you feel that way. The 15/40 gets thicker when hot so would seem to protect the old engine better at least that is what I have been told all my life. Why do you feel that the 30wt would be better for working the engine?

You are correct that under extended use a multi-viscosity oil will rend to return to it's lightest weight. If you plan to never change the oil again you might get better life with 30 wt. But if you do change your oil at four times the recommended interval or less the multi viscosity is superior. I really doubt that if you're concerned about oil choice you ever go over the recommended interval, much less double or triple or more.
