A few weeks ago I asked here if anyone had success using a generator marked 12 V as working with a 6 V regulator in a 6 V system. Folks thought it should work but there were no FIRM answers. Since that time I've had a chance to try it.

With a new 6 V regulator (from NAPA) the generator does work nicely and charges at 7.3 to 7.5 volts at the battery terminals depending on engine RPM.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that it does work in case anyone ever needs to use that combination of gen and VR. But no guarantee that this will work for you !! LOL
 
Can do the same with a step up 6 volts to 12 volts with a regulator swap as well. Just don't expect a great output, making a. 6 charge a 12.
 
The only difference i know of would be the fields. Amperage would be a little lower / higher depending which way you are going.
 
Ron, I'm NOT surprised at what you say. I have successfully over long term with no ill effects used the wrong volt genny with the right voltage regulator to charge a tractor or truck battery.........Basically the faster a genny spins and/or the more field current you pass through its field windings (increases magnetic field strength) the greater its output and controlling the field current is one function of a voltage regulator.

HOWEVER before anyone has a calf or gets their shorts in a wad IM NOTTTTTTTT SAYING THIS IS ENGINEERING CORRECT NOR AM I RECOMMENDING TO TRY IT AT HOME LOL

The reason being the field windings and/or possibly subject to design the VR's relay contacts have a certain current rating which may or may not be exceeded when you try the above. Sooooooooooo its best to have a professional shop change out the field windings if you want to operate at a different voltage........Still, Ive done it without any changes and NEVER had a problem with the Genny or VR.
