Ferguson 35 Battery Screw Up

Horse Shoe

First timer here so feel free to give me grief:

Installed a new battery into my ferguson TO35. Its a group 24 which is what I was told to replace the old one with. All went fine until I closed the hood after starting it. The hood made contact with the positive post, sparks flew and now all I get is a click when I try to start it. It cut off and wont restart even though I've got the hood back off of the post.

I'm just now learning about tractors and am open to advice, suggestion.

Thanks,
HS

Good chance you discharged the battery a good bit when you did that or you knocked a battery cable loose on the post. Charge the battery and also make sure the cables are good tight and clean

Put a charger on it and see how the charger reacts, let it charge if all OK. Then start troubleshooting stuff if it still doesn't start.

Also if it went dead short it could have melted an internal jumper
between the plates from cell to cell. If that is the case, battery
kaput.

If it hit the hood when you closed it then you have the wrong size battery. And that much of a dead short forget about that battery ever being usuable again. Just hope it didn't destroy generator and other electrical parts.

I done that on a TO-35 I had, not a lot of room for battery in there. Get a charger on the battery immediately to try and save it, the battery in mine came back to life and when I sold the tractor that battery was still in it. Seems like you can turn the battery a certain way and there was more clearance for the positive terminal and make sure the battery is tied down good. Of course the positive terminal on the battery may be on the wrong side of your battery to get the space you need. Good luck.

Charge it up & it will be ok. Years ago I was at a demonstration where they hooked up 60 penny spikes to a battery as a dead short. Watched them turn red hot to white hot then melted through in the center. Also how would it hurt the generator?????
