Square baler

Hey all looking to purchase my first square baler! Have no experience with John Deere but I think I am going to look at 327, any thoughts? I know to check side play in chains, sharp sprocket teeth and sloppy bearings after that it would just be using common sense. Would love to hear the pros and cons from yt land. Thanks in advance, Jude

Im no pro- but seems to me its the same topic as "Ford-Chevy-or Dodge" Depends on how many bales a year you bale- string or wire - a lot of us like New Holland- then there's the "John Deere Guys"....so take your pick.

To check chains you don't check side play. You pull the chain away from the larger sprocket. If it pulls far enough away so that you can see the tip of a tooth right where you are pulling, your chain is shot.

I think he means in the middle of where the chain contacts the sprocket. If the chain is worn it will be longer than the tooth spacing.

327 is a light duty baler, but still a good baler.

I'd look at the knives, check the hay dogs and twine guides and knotters. Chain is cheap to replace. Look for bale chamber wear. If the resistors are worn out its had a lot of bales through it and the plunger may be well worn.

Check the flywheel. If it is loose it may be hard to get it tight and it may break shear pins regularly. Check the stop that prevents the plunger from hitting the needles. If it shows a lot of wear there have been problems.

Check needle brake and knotter drive gear, run it through by hand and make sure it trips to tie.

Make sure pickup isn't bent and torn up. If the guards are missing or worn it may be a continuing problem.

Shot, the whole thing is that if you can pull it away from the sprocket with normal tension on it, it shows that not all of the links are pulling evenly, just the last few, which is what causes the teeth to wear and pull over at the tip.

Check to see if plunger head is loose in bale chamber. Check bale chamber & area where hay enters bale chamber for wear. One advantage of JD over a NH is JD sq baler of this era has only "2" chains to wear out & require replacement. I don't remember replacing many chains on JD sq balers.

327 baler is a good baler. I use two of them. Biggest thing id look at is if it looks beat half to death it probably is. Look to see if they kept it cleaned off if not stored inside. The chambe will rot as well as the area under theknotters.

I don't think it matters what color they are if that puppy ties a Nice knot
& makes a good bale for your needs it's a good baler.. I love the J/D baler
we have now & I loved the New Holland we had. They both tied knots & you didn't
have to work on them!!
