Classic Vs. Modern View and OT

Just like clockwork the topic of too many OT posts has cropped up right on its every other month schedule. Personally I don't see the problem, I read the subject of posts as I scan through and open the ones that interest me. It just struck me though that maybe the difference is that I am on modern view. I know from way back before modern view that threads got buried quickly, and the tendency is to look only at the first two pages. On modern view I usually look at only the first page because the interesting threads keep getting bumped up to the top. In addition, on modern view you can hit "view your posts" and the threads that you have posted to come up. This is what I do when I first log on so I can view the topics that interest me first. Using modern view makes OT a non-issue.

O T is already a non-issue to, I suspect, most of us. It only rankles the self
appointed forum police.

Modern was the default view that came up when I signed up, so at the time I never even realized there was anything else. I've switched over a few times just to see the other side of the fence, but my preference is to stick with Modern View. I actually like threads getting bumped up as new posts are made Only thing I don't care much for is the search function, but then I don't use it very much. Is more than likely OE -- Operator Error. *lol*

I also use Modern view. I too like the way replied to posts rise to the top of the 1st pages not buried several pages down in the forum. I don't understand why anyone would want to use the outdated Classic view but each to their own. I would like to see Classic view disappear just so we can have the ""edit feature reinstated"" so I could correct my typing blunders.

I know of another forum (non-tractor) that updated their forum software to give it a "new look". Now that forum is going under. Many new folks like how it looks and works, but they also have no idea how much easier things were before.

I've never used Classic View enough to "learn" it, but it seems the majority of folks on YT prefer it. Is it simply the 'change' that is uncomfortable, or are there actually user benefits to the Classic view? ...Guess I'll likely never know. However, it [i:489d1adc27]does[/i:489d1adc27] seem to be a conundrum that admin will eventually have to address. I just fear what that imminent time will do to the forum - as I'm sure they fear that as well.

I like Classic better as I know if a thread is older I can find it because I'll remember what its close to most of the time with modern it changes all around.

I prefer modern but I use classic on the
cell phone. Modern on the cell phone has
such small lettering I have to zoom to read
it, then I have to scroll side to side.

What would be a game changer for the Classic View is if you could subscribe to a topic such that when it gets buried, you still get notified when a post is made.

If more guys would take the time to PROOFREAD before they post a comment we wouldn't need to edit. I think lots of times, the poster just wants to be first to post an answer.

Sorry, I don't have an edit function. I just jumped to another topic and was reminded of the guy who likes to hear himself talk and have the most posts. Posts questions with no connection to yesterdays tractors. But I can understand old folks who don't get out much needing to talk to someone. I'll be 75 in a couple of weeks What the L does lol mean?

I prefer Classic because the thread shows who replied to whom... UNLESS, of course, someone clicks the wrong reply button.

I told Kim that years ago. Been on here since in the 90's before modern was thought of. Was on here several years before it says I joined and that is because the joined date is when they started registering handles.

Dave, how correct, just proofread and no need for an edit and if you want to correct a mistake let us know what the mistake was.

Same here been reading and stopping by since near the beginning in the mid 90's. l prefer classic hands down.

I can, and do use both modern and classic views. Not sure if I have a preference. I find it easier to post links on the classic view but it
is a little confusing to figure out who replied and in what order. Modern view is simple in that respect. Also easier to find if somebody
replied to a thread I'm interested in.

I started with classic, switched to modern and will NEVER GO BACK!

As far as correcting a post? Why? As long as you got you idea across it isn't that big a deal and it annoys the "correct police"! I myself really don't care if they get self gratification with perfect spelling and punctuation. Most likely it's they just feel superior to others.

RIck

Modern doesn't show who is replying to who, as Classic does. Oftentimes the replies are just a few words, and don't make much sense unless you can tell who they are responding to. If Classic disappears, I suspect a more than a few folks will, as well. In fact, when Modern first came up, the intent was to deep six Classic- there was such a hue and cry that they decided to keep it.

Agree.

Also like it because it allows HTML code for links, images, and various fonts.

Same here. Classic is just easier to follow on a post with many replies. to make my point, those on modern have to just guess who I am replying to. Also the modern page is just harder to read being that blueish color.

Well then, I must be confusing a LOT of folks out there in YT land. When I reply on a thread, it is always at the end of all the posts, so I simply click on 'Reply' in the last thread and make my post. If I'm responding directly to what someone else has said, then I'll either 'Quote' them or add their nickname, a space, and 2 dashes.....like this:
kcm.MN --

That makes it real clear who I'm replying to, though usually I'm simply replying to the thread in general.

For those of you using Classic View now, Rusty6 made the previous post, so that's the one I hit 'Reply' on. However, am not responding "to" Rusty6, so did not 'Quote' or do the Rusty6 -- thing.

....I can now understand how things can get so confusing on here. :?

Err....forgive me - wasn't Rusty6, but RustyPlow that made the previous post. Wow, I'm really making it difficult for you folks to follow today, eh?

I use modern view 99% of the time, the classic view is still good on rare occasions, but classic view just looks too cluttered to me. Since a lot of people still like, and use classic view there is no reason do away with classic.

I use Modern. Main reason is the posts in a thread are ordered according to time of being posted. In Classic view, when someone replys to a specific person in the middle of the thread, the order of the posts is all screwed up. For that reason I reply to the person posting the thread so mine gets to the top in Classic view. In Modern view I can reply to a specific person by clicking "quote post" and the thread will still stay in order.

I also like the threads with new posts coming to the top of the page.

Another forum I visit switched software a couple years. A few people left because of the change, but I can understand.

I use modern 100%. I get an email when someone responds to a post I have, and If I wanna reference the post again I doi a short response so I can check my post.
This is the only forum i use that still has the antiquated...i mean... classic view.
Lol

I first found the site when classic was the only one....I ended up forgetting about it for a few years, then came back and it showed modern. My thought What the.....is this? this can't be the right site. Tried to stay on the trail of some threads but the jumping posts was way to annoying....Eventually I found the classic link, now I'm here to stay...spend 80% of time here in classic(searches and once in while a stray post over on modern) much nicer of layout and post comment area isn't as cluttered (in classic), easier to post pictures, links....

I use both Classic and Modern views. I like Classic view for the aspect of seeing who is responding to whom. But on my computer the Classic view has the left sidebar available, ie the links to the Classified ads, the Galleries of photos, stories, etc, whereas Modern View does not have this left sidebar of links.

I really don't see what issue anyone has with classic view.... I much prefer to see who replies to what so the conversation can actually be
followed. I can't be bothered sifting through aimless comments to figure out who said what and in what context. I also can't stand
continuously having topics bouncing around in the forum... leave them in one place and I'll find them. I've already left one forum because of
this nonsense. If it comes here I'll be gone from here too.
I'd also be perfectly happy if nobody could edit their post after they make it... Do it right once and move on.

You are right, when viewing Modern view you can't always tell who is replying to who unless they quote the post like I'm doing with your post.

Like I stated in my previous post, I like the posts staying in order according to the time of being posted. A lot of times I find the order of what was posted when very important, especially if it's a problem solving thread.

Can't we all agree to disagree on which one is better or preferred. To each his own and stop the
yapping about the one you don't like.

Hell, we don't all like the same kind of women or beer or tractors or trucks or anything else for
that matter so why do we argue about classic versus modern?

I'll drink to that!!

....'Cept that I don't Drink.

You're right. This debate has been held how many times, and nothing has changed.

The unfortunate truth is that 18th century classic will still be here in the 25th century, in spite of how bad it sux and the fact that hardly no other forum on the internet uses it any more.

But it is what it is.

And if I could control that switch I would turn MODERN off. Hate the way it works. And the ones using it are the ones that mess up the order of the posts for the rest of us to follow.

It is only screwed up by someone posting on modern or do not understand where they are to put the post and if they cannot understand how to post on one type they could not understand how to post on the other so you would still have those problems. We did not have those messed up posts untill modern came about. Then it hurt all of us.

That's only because they are trying to run both systems simultaneously. Modern by itself works beautifully. I'm on several other forums that use it. The only one that has these issues is this one.

But.........whatever.

When I discovered the YT forums they were in classic view. Didn't even know there was a modern view till last year. I have no
complaints about the classic. I don't know how to switch to modern. I have never found a link or button that read "modern view"
