Taking Shape...........

Did a test run with the 60 gallon sprayer I'm building. First filled it half full and pulled it around on the roughest area it will be used on. No problem, no surges from water sloshing around, etc. Then filled it the rest of the way and repeated the route. Still no problem. That 18.5 hp garden tractor handled it OK. We have a 24 hp I could put on it, but it's hydrostatic, and this 18.5 is gearbox, so it's easier to hold a constant speed while spraying with the 18.5.

Next is to fabricate a 10' folding boom and a platform in front of the tank to mount the pump. My wife wondered if I could make it so you could turn each half of the boom on and off individually, so I'll have to fabricate a manifold with a couple of shut off valves. The pump itself will have a pressure shutoff so no return line will be needed.

The commercial units I've worked on had 3 sections, a fixed center section and then the two folding booms. Lets you get into much tighter areas, but requires three valves in the manifold.

You will want a return line or some thing similar to agitate the spray mix. I will second making it three sections.

When I modified my sprayer I got a, I think its called a broadcast nozzle from northern tool. Sprays a nice 12' wide pattern, I added a valve to turn it down, can spray anywhere to 6' to 12-14', works great and no boom.

The photo shows a Northern Tool NorthStar 3-section boom, Item# 268716, that?s described as having a 10-foot spray pattern. It came with 3 nozzles. The boom, when extended, actually measures 7 feet and cost $160.

Nozzles, valves and a variety of fittings are available from the Northern site. The boom comes with one shut-off valve. I ordered enough fittings to plumb a shut-off valve for each of the 3 nozzles.

The boom is close to the ground because a somewhat precise edge to the end nozzles spray fan was wanted when spraying the edge of the gravel road and parking areas.

The sprayer is a 26-gallon NorthStar spot sprayer, Item# 2681201, 2.2 GPM. They?re good sprayers but come with a cheap plastic wand that has never lasted a season. I bought one new replacement wand that leaked out of the box. After that, I bought the Valley Industries ?Deluxe Spot Spray Gun,? Item# 25136. It?s been a good?un.
